Isn’t that the way it is? Everyone wants to be greatest…at something.
Being greatest in heaven…to sit beside Jesus. Wow! What an honor! James and
John came to Jesus at one point in time and asked to be given the privilege to
sit on His right and left when He came into His glory (see Mark 10:37). Jesus
answered them...But it is not this way
among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;
and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the
Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom
for many. Mark 10:43-45. So who is greatest in heaven? It won’t be those
who ask for it. We shouldn’t seek glory and honor for ourselves—on earth or in
heaven. Jesus was pretty specific in this Mark passage that we need to be like
Him, willing to serve. This reminds me of scripture that the Care Group I’m
part of recently studied where Jesus taught about faith…and obedience. Which of you, having a slave plowing or
tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come
immediately and sit down to eat'? But will he not say to him, 'Prepare
something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat
and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink'? He does not thank the slave
because he did the things which were commanded, does he? So you too, when you
do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we
have done only that which we ought to have done.' Luke 17:7-10. We can’t
expect to be served—but to serve others. Jesus did. Can we do any less?
RSVP: Jesus is calling us today to serve others—not to
seek greatness on earth or in the kingdom of heaven. How will you respond to Him
today?
Prayer ~ Jesus, help me to humble myself and be
obedient to You to serve others as You did.
