Support Workers

Read Proverbs 2

Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support. Matthew 10:9-10

Here Jesus was addressing His twelve disciples as He sent them out to the lost Israelis. He had just given them The ability to caste out unclean spirits and to heal every kind of disease and sickness. Now He wanted them to go out healing and preaching that the Kingdom of heaven was at hand. They were to rely on people in the villages that they visited to support them and provide for their physical needs as the disciples met the community's spiritual needs. Support the workers. The generosity of the congregation is still the way that pastors are supported today. Budgets must be met--so the congregation must tithe. Are you doing your fair share?

Teaching Tip - if you have not already done so, teach your children about tithing. Give them a job to do and then pay them. Explain to them that they must give ten percent of their earnings to God--to the church. Then on Sunday see to it that they bring their tithe, along with you bringing yours, to church.

Lord, thank you for the workers you put into our lives that teach us about You--and show us how to live obedient and faithful lives.

Friday’s Feast at the Lord’s Table

Most of the blueberries picking in my area of the Northwest is already over—but in my backyard I still have blueberries ripening and ready to pick. Yum! One of our family favorites besides eating them fresh off the bush is to make blueberry muffins. I like to use the fancy muffin tins that make them into little cakes.

Blueberry Cake Muffins
1¾ cups flour
1/3 cup granulated cane sugar
2½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
Zest from 1 lemon ~ 1 tsp
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
¾ cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
Powdered sugar, for garnish

Spray non-stick mini-cake pan (12 cups fluted) or line regular muffin tins. In a mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and zest. Add blueberries. Mix milk, egg and butter. Add to dry ingredients, mixing until lumpy. Do not overbeat. Divide batter evenly between muffin cups. Bake 20-25 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched. Remove from pan and when cooled, dust with powdered sugar. Top with additional blueberries if desired. Great served with lemon sorbet. Enjoy any time of day. You may even want to take some to your pastor or other workers at your church or community. Maybe even to your local firemen!
