May 14 – A Heart with Patience

So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience…. Colossians 3:12

Chosen by God. That is such an awesome thought for me. Out of all the people in the world in all of time—God reached down from Heaven, touched me—and said I chose you. Well—in the Bible He said that all who believe in His Son will become adopted into His family. That includes me. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name…John 1:12. And as written in 1 Peter 2:9-10…you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Chosen. Royal priesthood. God in His mercy has a lot of patience with those who He selects to be part of His family. We are not instantly perfect like Jesus, but God waits for us to develop characteristics like His Son. Likewise we should put on a heart of patience and treat our family as royalty—patiently guarding and keeping them from darkness—from evil as they develop the character traits of Jesus.

Training Tip – Are you memorizing John 1:12 with your family? (See the May 11 post.) Memorizing scripture takes patience and persistence. Don’t be impatient with your children when it comes to memorization. Keep on reviewing the scripture that you are trying to memorize. As you review the scripture it will help you and your family to remember the verses. Review, review, review.

Lord God, we give you thanks because You have patiently chosen us from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth…. 2 Thessalonians 2:13
