Have you ever read
something and then asked yourself—what did I just read? As you study God’s
Word, recall what you have just read. It may tell you about something
that He has done for you—or for someone that you know. Historically there are
lots of actions in the Bible that are just that—historical. Those may not seem
to apply to our lives today—but it is still interesting to understand what has
happened to God’s people and what He expected of them. Can you put the issue
into the context of the history of God?
In the Old Testament
the 17 books from Genesis through Esther are considered historical. The first five
books, Matthew through Acts, in the New Testament are also historical. Although
many scripture passages in the books written by Paul have historical
significance since they include mention of particular rulers during that time,
those are mainly teaching books. History always seemed like a dull subject to
me until I it wasn’t something I HAD to learn—but something that was part of an
intriguing puzzle that was waiting to be put together—to be understood. History
has such a macabre element to it—who wants to know all about the death of so
many people over the ages, but God has touched lives all around the world for
good, too. Just like in the verse from Psalm 77—I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. Those occurrences in history are worth
recalling.
Lord, as we sudy your word help us to recall the good things that
You have done—Your death and resurrection for our sins. May others come to know
what You have done for them, too.
