One of the earliest
songs I remember—and it is still being taught to kids today—“I will make you
fishers of men, if you follow me.” The kids pantomime casting fishing line and cranking
it in. Kids love action songs. They really get into the fishing!
Fishing at the Sea of Galilee |
Simon, who was also known
as Peter, and his brother, Andrew, used fishing nets that were huge circular nets with
weights at intervals. They would cast them out into the water and trap the fish
inside the net, then pull it into the boat. They responded immediately by leaving their smelly old fishing nets and following
Jesus. Immediately, not a few hours
later or the next day. They heard Jesus call and they responded.
Jesus was commanding
Simon Peter and Andrew to come with Him—to leave their fishing nets—their way
of live and come alongside of Him—to literally FOLLOW Him. He was calling them
to serve.
Listen. Have you
heard Jesus call you? Follow Me. Serve others by doing what I ask of you.
How are you responding to His call?
Jesus, we hear you calling—and we leave our
nets and fishing poles to follow you.
