Ten Commandment

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: "Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?" The man answered, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" "Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!" The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:25-29

Meditate on love.

 

All you have to do is love…. But who is my neighbor? The Jews at Jesus’ time had the books that we know as the Old Testament. There are no direct references to “eternal life” in those books, but there are verses that refer to a promise of everlasting life.

Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting disgrace. Daniel 12:2

 

Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And there the LORD has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting. Psalm 133:3

 

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:6

Some verses explain that it is God who lives forever.

But you are always the same; you will live forever. Psalm 102:27

The Jewish man questioning Jesus knew Moses’ scripture, the Law

Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. And, you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:4-5

 

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:18

These verses sum up all the Ten Commandments—like Jesus did.

Jesus replied, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40

How do you show your love to God? How do you show your love for others…and for yourself? Loving God will give us eternal life. Believe.

            What do you learn about Jesus from this scripture passage?

 

Prayer – Lord, have mercy. Let us show our love to You and others constantly as we accept the love You have for us. Wildfires plague our area. Have mercy!

 

Verse of Salvation ~ God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:8-10
