Reverence is
to recognize and respect someone or something. We recently visited a couple of
large cathedrals in Germany. When we entered those massive building, knowing
that they had been built to honor God—and had taken hundreds of years to build—the
tourists hushed their voices and an awe filled the expansive rooms. Worship. Yes,
worship happened with each breath and with each blink of our eyes as we were
overwhelmed by the enormity of the structures and the elaborate decorations. Is
there more reverence for God and true worship of Him in a great cathedral, in a
humble room of an ancient castle or in our own homes? It is in the attitude of
the worshiper. What is your heart attitude as you worship the Lord today?
Training Tip – Children mimic their parents—just like little birds
following their parents. My seventeen month old granddaughter already knows to
fold her hands and bow her head when we pray before meals. So precious. Why
does she know that? Her mother and father have taught her—and she sees them
doing that before meals—she knows the routine. Make reverence at home and at
church your routine and your children, with your encouragement, will know to be
reverent before the Lord—to worship Him with respect and in awe. As King David
wrote in Psalm 2, worship the Lord rejoicing with reverence and rejoice with
trembling.
Lord God, we come before You, knowing You are all
powerful and we worship You as the mighty God, Savior, creator, sustainer,
provider and teacher that You are. You alone are worthy of our reverence,
respect and honor. We love you. Create in us not only clean hearts, renewing a
right spirit and attitude in each of us, but please give us a vision to see
ourselves as You see us—and help us to grow to be more like You, Jesus.
