Purpose

But He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose." Luke 4:43

Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. John 12:27

…the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8

Jesus had a specific purpose to His life—to do the will of His Father, to tell others about His Father’s Kingdom and to destroy the works of the devil. Pretty straight forward. We on the other hand struggle with what our purpose is in life. How often have you wondered, “Why am I here on earth?” “What am I suppose to do when I grow up?” “What is God’s will for my life me?” We make decisions every minute of every day that affect our purpose for living. As we focus our lives on Jesus—our purpose becomes more centered on Him. What do you see as your purpose?

Training Tip – Sit down with your children—especially those who are in their teens and help them set some goals—encourage them in areas of their strengths. If they are good with people, they will do well in careers where they interact with people—not just with computers and vise versa. Those who do well in math will be successful in scientific areas. Choices of courses in high school and college are important and shouldn’t be made just because friends will be in those classes. Considerable thought and planning should be done before choosing a particular career field, college, and major field of study. Some people even feel that college isn’t necessary—but if not, then a good trade school may provide essential training. College may not be for everyone, but a college degree does prove that the recipient has reached a level of commitment that is not attained by everyone. Education is the key that often opens doors to career opportunities. Spiritual goals should also be considered—and parents can begin providing goals, like scripture memorization, early in a child’s life. What goals have you set or helped your children set?

Lord Jesus, You had a purpose in Your life that was established by Your Heavenly Father. Show us how to set goals that give us, our children and our grandchildren purpose for living.
