October 21 – Constant Guidance

My son, keep your father's command, and do not forsake the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart. Tie the around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk to you. For the commandment is a lamp, and a law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Proverbs 6:20-23 (NASB & NKJV)

Such wisdom in this passage of scripture. Following the "commands" of parents is good--especially if the parents are taking their advice and guidance from the Lord. This is similar advice as that given in Deuteronomy 6:5-9...You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.  The Hebrew people were being told to constantly focus their lives on The Lord and His commandments. Do we do that today? Most homes today have the television as the center of their lives with sports or other entertainment providing "constant guidance" and as people travel their radios are blaring the music of their choice--is it honoring The Lord? Don't get me wrong--I enjoy watching some TV, too, but I question its power over our society. We make the choice each day--moment by moment. Choose wisely.

Training Tip – With your family write out Deuteronomy 6:5 several times and post it around your home. If your children can't read yet then let them color or draw a picture of what they think it looks like to love The Lord with all your heart, soul, and might. Memorize that verse together and talk about it and the Lord several times everyday until it becomes natural to include the Lord in your conversations with your family.

Lord God, we want to honor you with our lives and follow your commands. You are worthy of all glory and honor.
