This next character trait that we will consider is Humility. Humility is
found 10 times in the New American Standard Bible translation. Humble is
translated from the Hebrew and Greek 49 times. That’s a lot of putting others
first, submitted to God and others, and remembering how Christ served. In this
passage, Luke 22:27, Jesus is challenging His disciples humbly to think about
servanthood. He spoke these words during His final evening with the disciples,
right after the Last Supper, before they went to the Garden of Gethsemane where
He was arrested. He was the greatest—yet He was a servant. He washed the feet
of each of His disciples that evening—a humbling experience for them, to have
their master wash and lovingly dry their dirty feet. In His thoughts, do you
think that He could hear His mother reminding Him to make sure to dry between
each toe? Toes that He created.
Training Tip – Read the scripture or the story from this passage
to your family. Talk about how humbling it was for Jesus to kneel at the feet
of those He taught, those who worshipped Him.
You have
washed your children’s feet many times, but have they ever washed your feet?
Get a basin of water and a couple of towels. Let your kids wash and dry your
feet. Talk about what it means to be humble—to put others first.
Lord Jesus, Thank you for this example in humility
that You lived and gave to us. Help us to be willing to serve others—to put
others needs ahead of our own.
