Peace?

Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. Romans 12:18 NLT

Will peace ever come to our world? With the agreement that requires continual inspection of Iran for development of nuclear weapons—in exchange for less sanctions and their ability to enter the oil market again, peace will not be guaranteed in the Middle East. Israel will still live in fear of attack by terrorists and invasion by their neighbors. There is no peace accord…no assurance of peace in that region. In the next fifteen years that this Iran agreement covers, is the world assured that Iran will not developed a nuclear weapon anyway? Their own integrity is at stake…but do they care?

Do all that you can to live at peace with others…in your home, neighborhood, community and world. What steps will you take today to provide and protect peace…in your own spirit and in your physical environment?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, surround us with Your grace and love that we would seek peace, not only within our own lives…but with others in our home, neighborhood and community. Love and peace start here…within our hearts and our homes. Guide and direct us…showing us ways to seek peace and to be peaceful with others. Thank you that You care enough about us to help us do what is right.

Payback?

Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Romans 12:17 NLT

We should try to stay as far away from evil as possible—and certainly not engage in any evil practices. Don’t be tempted to succumb to evil deeds. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 Proverbs gives us some good guidance on evil.

For there will be no future for the evil man; the lamp of the wicked will be put out. Proverbs 24:20

Do not say, "Thus I shall do to him as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work." Proverbs 24:29

Do not say, "I will repay evil"; wait for the LORD, and He will save you. Proverbs 20:22.

God will repay people…we don’t need to take things into our hands. For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay." and again, "the Lord will judge His people." Hebrews 10:30. It may be hard to let go of things that we feel deserve punishment. It isn’t up to us, the Lord will punish those He feels deserve His justice. We are to act honorably—to treat others as we would treat Jesus Himself—even if we don’t feel they deserve. Do you feel that your actions are honorable—worthy of the Lord?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, create once again in me once again a clean heart and renew a right spirit in me that everything I think, say, and do would be honorable. Protect me, my family and friends from evil practices and situations that occur in life. Help us not to even want to pay back evil for evil.

Friday’s Feast at the Lord’s Table

My daughter-in-law’s favorite “cake” for her birthday can actually be considered an ice cream pie. Here’s the one I made for her special day this year.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Pie

1 package Oreo cookies, crushed or grated in the food processor

1 cube of unsalted butter, softened

2 cartons of Reese’s Peanut Butter ice cream, slightly softened

1 bag of large Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup candy bars, frozen, and crushed

Chocolate fudge sauce

Cool Whip or canned whipped cream

Mix soft butter and crushed cookies. Press into a 9X12 inch glass casserole dish. Freeze for a few minutes. Cut one carton of ice cream in about ½ inch slices and spread evenly over cookie crust. Top with crushed candy. Spread remaining carton of ice cream over the crushed candy. Freeze until firm, several hours or overnight. Drizzle with chocolate fudge sauce. Garnish with whipped cream, or dollops of Cool Whip. Freeze again, or serve immediately. Enjoy!

Live in Harmony

Live in harmony with each other. Don't be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don't think you know it all! Romans 12:16 NLT

Whoa! Good advice—live in harmony and don’t be a know it all! No one likes a know it all—they are the ones that people tend to walk away from in a group conversation…and try to escape from if they are just speaking with one-on-one. I know…I used to be one of “those” people. My opinion always counted and I felt like I was always right—I know. I’ve been humbled over the years and shown that I don’t know it all. I try to listen more than talk now. Listening is a good thing. And ordinary people are those with whom I want to hang out. They aren’t out to impress you, although like anyone else they do want to let you know that they’ve been to the Empire State Building three times and shook hands with President Reagan. Hmmm. I guess I do know influential people. It’s not who you know…or where they’ve been…but do they know the Lord as their Savior—their Messiah? Have they developed a relationship with the Lord? Are you encouraging others—and are you holding each other accountable for your spiritual growth?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, help me to live in harmony with my fellow Christians and enjoy everyone’s company. May we see You in each other. As we grow together in our relationship with You and with one another, may we bring others into a bond with Jesus, too. We will never know too much about You, Lord God, this side of heaven, but reveal ways to us that we can serve You and love others for who they are.

Smiles or Tears

Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 NLT

It is pretty easy to be happy when you are around someone who is truly happy—rejoicing! But it can be awkward to be around people who are mourning or weeping—crying their eyes out. If it family or someone with whom you are really close...then it is easier to cry along with them—to feel their pain. When was the last time you really cried with someone? Years ago I discovered that crying gave me a headache—so I stopped crying at things like weddings. My eyes do water easily…so saying “good-bye” to loved ones…and even reading some Facebook postings brings tears to my eyes. What am I to do? I’m weeping with those who weep. The Holy Spirit is giving guidance to the Romans…and to us as well. Don’t worry…be happy…and go ahead and cry. It’s good for others and for you.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, create in us empathy for deeply feeling the joy and sorrows of our fellow Christians.

Persecuted?

Bless those who persecute you. Don't curse them; pray that God will bless them. Romans 12:14 NLT

Persecution. Here in the United States, we hardly know what the word means. In other countries like North Korea, Iraq, Nigeria, Syria, and Somalia, Christians are experience REAL persecution—even death for their belief in Christ. Paul advices the Romans not to curse those persecutors. We have a promise from God …The LORD your God will inflict all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. Deuteronomy 30:7. He will ultimately take care of those evil doers—bless them instead of cursing them.

Jesus spoke about persecution…Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:10-12. I cannot imagine rejoicing at being tortured, mistreated or killed—but what a privilege to stand up for Christ. Those Christians are to be blessed—and honored.

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Romans 8:35.

Prayer ~ Jesus, be with our brothers and sisters around the world—and give them strength to endure the persecution that they are experiencing. Remind us that nothing and no one can separate us from Your love—and if we should ever have to face persecution…may we through the Holy Spirit find our strength in Your love and grace in our lives.

Needy People Need Hospitality

When God's people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Romans 12:13 NLT

God’s people—the family of God—Christians—are brothers and sister of Christ. God has promised to provide for “needs” not wants. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19. God promises to take care of us. In one of the most beloved psalm it says…The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. Psalm 23:1 Jesus talked to His disciples about taking care of the “needs” of His followers—and about hospitality.

Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.' "Then these righteous ones will reply, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?' "And the King will say, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!' "Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, 'Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn't feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn't give me a drink. I was a stranger, and you didn't invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn't give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn't visit me.' "Then they will reply, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?' "And he will answer, 'I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.' Things haven’t changed. People still have “needs” and we need to take care of others when a need arises. If you were the one in “need” you would want someone to help you out. That is what our welfare system started out to do…but it seems that it has gotten out of control. For now—within the church it is best if we just help those who need help—practice hospitality. Be generous with our time and resources—food, water, clothes and ability to just visit others or invite them into our homes. Just as Jesus taught His disciples, we will be rewarded or punished for our actions. What will you do today to help those in need?

Prayer ~ Jesus, just as You taught Your disciples, I want to be ready to help others. Holy Spirit, open my eyes to opportunities to serve others and my heart to be willing to obey.

Our Hope is in the Lord

Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. Romans 12:12 NLT

The Holy Spirit gives us hope. There are 140 occurrences of hope in the NASB translation and 146 times in the NLT versions of the Bible. That is a lot of HOPE. From Job… Doesn't your reverence for God give you confidence? Doesn't your life of integrity give you hope? Job 4:6 NLT. Other verses of encouragement offering hope:

· So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD! Psalm 31:24 NLT

· And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. Psalm 39:7 NLT

· Let your unfailing love surround us, LORD, for our hope is in you alone. Psalm 33:22 NLT

· Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again--my Savior and my God! Psalm 42:5 NLT

· So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. Psalm 78:7 NLT

Prayer ~ Jesus, our hope is in You, Lord. Holy Spirit—give us wisdom to pray and handle the truth of God’s Word, sharing it with those who still need to hear and understand it.

R U Lazy?

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Romans 12:11 NLT

There is so much wisdom in the Bible, mostly in Proverbs, about not being lazy. Here are a few:

· Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich. Proverbs 10:4 NLT

· Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. Proverbs 12:24 NLT

· Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper. Proverbs 13:4 NLT

· A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things. Proverbs 18:9 NLT

· Lazy people sleep soundly, but idleness leaves them hungry. Proverbs 19:15 NLT

· Those too lazy to plow in the right season will have no food at the harvest. Proverbs 20:4 NLT

· Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work. Proverbs 21:25 NLT

· Lazy people take food in their hand but don't even lift it to their mouth. Lazy people consider themselves smarter than seven wise counselors. Proverbs 26:15-16 NLT

· Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 NLT

I hope that you never choose to be lazy. Sure we may have days when we just want to kick back and relax…and not do much of anything, but it should not become a way of life. Consider the results of laziness—no food, slavery, and the poor house.

On the other hand, hard work will be rewarded.

· Work hard to enter the narrow door to God's Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail. Luke 13:24 NLT

· Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too. 2 Corinthians 5:11 NLT

· Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. Philippians 2:12 NLT

Serve the Lord enthusiastically—with love and honor for Him and others.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit—Open my eyes to my attitude. Am I lazy in any way? Show me how I can work hard to serve and honor You.

Love and Honor

Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Romans 12:10 NLT

Love is the fruit of the Spirit…Galatians 5:22. It is pure. It allows us to serve others for the Lord—to honor Him. Honoring others, honors the Lord. Honoring the Lord is very important…as it was promised to the priests…the Levites. "If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name," says the LORD of hosts, "then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart." Malachi 2:2.

Most wedding vows say words like love and honor. By loving and honoring our spouses, we honor God Himself. In the story of the priest Eli we find another promise from God. "Therefore the LORD God of Israel declares, 'I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father should walk before Me forever'; but now the LORD declares, 'Far be it from Me--for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me will be lightly esteemed.' 1 Samuel 2:30. What a promise..honor the Lord or be despised by Him. The choice once again is ours. We can honor others…and God…or despise Him. What is your choice today.

Prayer ~ Dear God, I chose to honor You…for You are worthy—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Accept my love and honor. Continue to show me how I can genuinely love others for You.

Friday’s Feast at the Lord’s Table

It is lavender time of the year. If you have some blooming in your yard, or can get some at your local farmer’s market you can add it to many delightful recipes. Here’s one I’ve adapted from my favorite scone recipe.

Fresh Lavender Scones

2 cups flour

¹⁄₂ cup rolled oats

2 teaspoons baking powder

¹⁄₂ teaspoon salt

¹⁄₄ cup butter

¹⁄₂ cup walnuts, chopped

1¹⁄₂ tablespoons lavender flowers, fresh

2 eggs, beaten

¹⁄₃ cup honey (or 1 Tbsp sugar)

¹⁄₂ cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 425degrees. In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add walnuts and lavender, mixing until combined.

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add the eggs, honey, buttermilk and vanilla. Stir to combine, mixing to form a soft dough. Add just a tad more flour if too sticky, as it may depend on the humidity in your area. With floured hands, pat the dough into a square about 1 inch thick and cut into smaller squares using a large pastry cutter. Makes about 12.

Place scones on a parchment lined or non-stick cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove from heat. Serve warm with lemon curd. Enjoy!

Love Inspired by the Holy Spirit

Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Romans 12:9 NLT

Don’t pretend…don’t fake really caring about others. With the Holy Spirit living in us…and us living to please God there is no element of phoniness in our lives. Love flows through us…but still we have a choice how we act…or react to any situation. The Holy Spirit inspires love, for God is Love. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:8. That is it plain and simple. God is love. Those who don’t know God—don’t love with His love. His pure and abiding love. Take a look at the way you love others. Is it with God’s love? Inspired by the Holy Spirit?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts, words and actions—inspiring me to love with the Love of the Lord. Pure, honest and flowing from the depths of my heart.

Stay Alert

Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don't really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord's return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people are saying, "Everything is peaceful and secure," then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman's labor pains begin. And there will be no escape. But you aren't in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won't be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don't belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 NLT

Stay alert. It is easy in our culture to just lay back and let the world slide by. We just take life day by day. We do just what we need to do…work, eat and play—be entertained by sports, TV and movies. But life is unpredictable. There is so much gloom and doom…wars, rumors of war, economic failure in cities and countries. Disasters happen. Earthquakes, floods, or tornados. People get sick, hurt, loose their job…or maybe are attacked. Life changes. How can we prepare? Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. Matthew 24:42. Watch out! Don't let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don't let that day catch you unaware, like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man. Luke 21:34-36 NLT Don’t get caught up in worldly activities. Be on guard. Be ready. How can you be ready if you are not alert and clearheaded? Be prepared— even vigilant. Don’t get lost in a fog—keep observant to everything happening around you—to things that are happening in the world. Help others—share with them.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit—keep me alert to all that is happening around me that I would be prepared, not unaware and that my family, friends and neighbors would be spiritually strong, too

What is Your Goal?

Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-14

Press on—don’t look back. Having a goal is a good thing. I worked for many years with three ambitious young men who always had goals—besides working 40-50 hours a week. They always had vacation plans. Big plans like fishing in New Zealand, climbing in the Himalayans, snow skiing near Bend, Oregon, or taking the family to Spain. Always nice vacations. My vacations—camping with the family in the mountains—seemed kind of simple. That was a good goal for us—it was a prize we longed for and planned for—the 4^th of July around the campfire together! Now our goal is a bit loftier—Heaven. I plan to go there someday and hope to take as many family, friends and acquaintances with me as possible. How do I plan to do that? Well—I’ve gotta share the gospel with as many others as possible. That’s the hard part. It is beyond my comfort zone—except here on my blog. I’m not one for knocking on doors or talking about Jesus to strangers in the grocery store. If you read this…Do you know Jesus? Who is He to you? Do you know that His Father loved you…and everyone so much that He allowed Jesus to die—a sacrifice for all humanity—so that we can be purified and go to be with Him in Heaven one day? It’s the truth. A truth that will set you free—free from sin—free from spiritual death. Sure our bodies will all die—but our soul lives on forever. Our souls will either live with Jesus in Heaven…or without Him in hell. No other choices. We make that ultimate choice when we press on to our goal…Heaven or Not Heaven (hell). Which will it be for you?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit—as the time draws closer to the Day of the Lord…or my day with the Lord…help me to boldly share the plan of salvation—the hope of Heaven with everyone I meet. It is my goal—and I press on towards this upward call.

Don’t Get Tired

Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone--especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:8-10 NLT

Don’t get tired of doing good for others…especially those in the family of God. As I was doing my two-mile walk a day or two ago I was thinking about how excited a person is when they first ask Jesus to be their Savior—and become part of the family of God. Adopted. Shortly after I accepted Christ—as my Messiah—I went to visit my sister who was living in Biloxi, Mississippi, at the time. She said there was something different about me…I just thought it was my haircut—I was wearing it a little shorter than I had been since I’d seen her. No—it wasn’t the hair. Then I thought for a minute or two—thinking is always a good thing—and said...well, I had accepted Christ as my Savior. That’s it! She had also accepted Christ and I think it was the Holy Spirit in each of us that gave us a new awareness of changes. Jesus does change us—for the good—to do good for Him whenever we have an opportunity. We need to be on the lookout for those opportunities. If we just focus on ourselves—like those who live only to satisfy their own desires or sinful nature—then we miss out on chances to serve the Lord. Isn’t that what life is all about? Relationships created when there is an occasion to help someone. People may seek “happiness”—but really what we all really need is to be loved and accepted by God, family, and friends. That awareness of God’s love fill our hearts and lives—spilling out to others. The “doing good” is an expression of that love. At least that is what I’ve experienced. How about you?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit—quicken in my heart not only a desire to do good, but help me to focus on situations and people around me so that I can see opportunities to serve others for You.

Are You Pleasing?

Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 2 Corinthians 5:9-10

Judgement may be kind of scary for some people. They’ll have to face up to their bad deeds…we all will. What have you done in your life that you know was not pleasing to the Lord? Have you asked for His forgiveness for that action or attitude? Facing up to them now I think is a good idea. We all have choices to make. Moment by moment we all make little choices…that can end up influencing big choices at change points in our lives. I’ve been reflecting lately that we can’t look back at what might have been…or how things could have turned out. But God doesn’t want us to “look back.” But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." Luke 9:62. Look ahead and be ready. I blogged that recently and so I am preaching to myself. Don’t look back—plan and look ahead. My ambition is to serve You, Lord. I need to make good choices for today…that will allow God to work in and through me to serve and help others for the Lord. Day by day—moment by moment. Be pleasing to the Lord.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit—work in and through me that I would live a life that is pleasing to You…and make what I think, say and do all be of service to others for You. Attitude is everything. You are worthy of my praise.

Liberty and Freedom

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into His glorious image. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NLT

Our liberty and freedom are found in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Sure we here in the United States have freedom because of our democracy and wonderful armed forces that keep our country secure and safe. Relatively safe. There are always going to be forces within and beyond all countries of the world that want to cause harm. We can be secure in knowing that it is the Lord who fights our battles for us. As the Spirit of the Lord declared through Jahaziel…Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s. 2 Chronicles 20: 15. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Ephesians 6:12- 13 NLT. The battle that we face is spiritual…and if God is for us who can be against us? Put on your armor daily…just as it says in Ephesians 6: 10-18. As we yield our lives to Him waiting upon the Lord…for that Day of the Lord…we can be assured that we are being spiritually transformed to be more like Jesus every day. That is freedom. Freedom to choose to be like Jesus. Where do you stand with God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit today? Are you experiencing His freedom?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit—Bless and guide our nation and each Christian around the world as we celebrate another year of freedom. Give our leaders wisdom and may all that we do bring glory to You.

Is Time Running Out?

This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don't participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don't let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires. Romans 13:11-14 NLT

This year is half over. You may be asking yourself—where has it gone? Time goes so fast…and faster as we get older. So time is literally running out. What have you got planned for today…for tomorrow? Paul was saying to the church at Rome…wake up. The day of salvation—the day of the Lord—The Day is coming and will be here for us before we’re ready if we don’t plan ahead. All this advice that Paul is giving about not indulging evil desires and wild parties is probably wasted on most of us older folks—but it is a word to the wise to pass on to the younger generation. Oh—lustful thoughts may try to drift intoy our mind—but have a plan. Take those thoughts captive and don’t let them into your head. Remember that Jesus taught that to think a sinful act is to do it (see Matthew 5:28). As Paul advised… live decent lives for all to see. Be holy. Share holy thoughts and scripture passages with your family and the person that you are mentoring. We all should be mentored by someone…and mentor someone. As we look towards the Fourth of July—our nation’s birthday—may we realize how blessed we are. Do something today to share God’s love and draw others to Him.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, wake me up. Show me what I need to be doing to get ready for the Day of the Lord. May all that I think, do and say be acceptable—even holy—and an example to others for how we should live our lives.

Friday’s Feast at the Lord’s Table

Fourth of July is usually a big camping day for our family—but we might just be in our backyard this year. How about you? Here’s a fun and easy idea to try with your kids or grandkiddos that we’ve adapted from The Scout’s Outdoor Cookbook. You’ll need a paper milk or juice half-gallon carton for each hot dog. Remove the spout (plastic variety) from the carton, if there is one.

Grandpa’s Flaming Dog

One hot dog per person—or more as their appetite requests.

Bun for the hot dog

Sliced cheddar cheese, if desired

Heavy duty aluminum foil

Newspaper

Wax covered paper milk carton

Fire pit

Catsup, mustard, chopped onion and relish condiments to add to the finished dog.

Slice the hot dog length wise, just creating a little canal. Fold or tear the cheese and place in the canal of the hot dog. Place it in the bun and wrap in aluminum foil. Then wrap it in a sheet of newspaper, open the top of the empty paper carton, and place it inside. Put the carton upright in a fire pit and set the newspaper on fire. The carton will catch fire and slowly burn. When the carton is ashes, the hot dog will be done. Remove from the fire pit with tongs. Unwrap and enjoy the hot dog with the usual condiments.

HOPE

And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. Romans 8:23-25

Faith. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1. For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. Galatians 5:5. Faith and Hope. Those two qualities are so intertwined. There is no faith without hope…and no hope without faith. Faith for what we don’t see and hope for that same unseen thing. In this case it is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ—who we don’t see now—but hope to see Him one day. That Day of the Lord when He returns is the ultimate hope. It will be a wonderful day for those who believe in Jesus…although some people have portrayed it as an awful day. One in which people will be filled with terror because of the destruction of the earth. For Christians we can rejoice in that Day—it will be the day of our home going—our time to be with our adopted father—the Heavenly Father. Going to His Home—Heaven. Cling to your hope. I am waiting eagerly for that day—with great hope.

Prayer ~ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for us, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5.

Are You Being Led by the Spirit of God?

So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:12-14

We don’t have to live like others in the world—in fleshly ways. Sinful ways. We can chose to live holy lives. Why would we want to do that? Isn’t sin more fun…won’t it make us happy? For just a fleeting moment it may seem like sin will make you happy…and that is what so many people are seeking. Happiness. Think of it like a big lollipop. It makes you happy for the time that that sweet taste is on your tongue…but then too much of it makes your stomach upset…and too much of it can make your teeth decay. So where is the happiness in an upset tummy or toothache? We can choose better. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 7:1. Get clean. Get holy. The choice is ours. No sin—like no lollipops—in our lives. Be led by the Spirit.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, lead me in the paths of righteousness for Your name sake (Psalm 23:3) and guide me in the way of the Lord that I will be ready for His return. Bless also my family, friends and neighbors that they would seek God with all of their heart, soul and mind; be led by You—and be children of God.
