We Need Rest

Get on board!
We'll cross the Sea of Galilee to the other side.
Rest on these peaceful waters of Israel.
Then Jesus said, "Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile." He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat. So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. Mark 6:31-32

Meditate on quietness.

Jesus was so wise. He knew that He and the disciples needed rest. Remember one of the Ten Commandments is about rest.

On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. Genesis 2:2-3

Just like Jesus and the disciples, we need rest. The disciples had just returned to Capernaum from a time of ministering to others—like a working vacation. They were excited about the work they’d been doing—but they were probably exhausted. Now Jesus wanted them all to rest…alone, without crowds. The Sea of Galilee could be very restful—with no storms, the water could be as smooth as glass, calming, and peaceful. Just what Jesus and His disciples needed. They were headed for an equally restful place, but will they find it as quiet and relaxing as they’d hoped?

What knowledge about Jesus do you obtain from this scripture passage?

Prayer – Lord Jesus, I appreciate Your reminder to rest! I’m tired…and I need rest. Unlike You, I have no crowd surrounding me, so I have no excuse. I just need to take my rest. Please give me the sleep that my body needs…and that will help my spiritual rest and growth, too.

Verse of Salvation ~ Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God's law. This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Romans 13:10-12
