Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9-13
Meditate.
Consider sin and forgiveness.
| The Word of God written for you. You cannot live without it! |
But Jesus told him, "No! The
Scriptures say, 'People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that
comes from the mouth of God.'" Matthew
4:4
Live by
God’s Word…not bread alone. Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days.
Can you imagine how hungry and thirsty you would be going without food AND
water for forty days? How long can a person survive without water or food?
After
reviewing several websites, it seems that a person could exist for several hours
to several days without water, but it is impossible to predict precisely how
long anyone can survive due to many variables involved including ambient
temperature, health conditions, age, and activity level—such as exercise.
Survival without food is another scenarios that has many variables, but people have
been known to survive 21-40 days fasting from all food.
Consider
that it would have been hot at any time of the year that Jesus would have spent
40 days in the Judean desert. The daytime temperatures vary from 20.5 C in
January to 39.7 C in July (that is 68.9 F to 103.5 F). Their rainfall varies
from 0 to 9 mm (0.35 inches) each month. That is very dry! And little if
anything grows there—so Jesus would not have had much food available to Him on
which to just nibble. And we think it is dry in the Tri-Cities where we get
less than 10 inches of rain a year—but there are lots of different plants that
grow wild here—some of them are even edible. Not much in the Desert of Judea. Do
not live by bread alone. Hmm...yes, let's have some meat and potatoes with
that bread—or at least some salad and veggies. That is not what Jesus was
talking about. The scripture He was quoting is found in
the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy.
Yes, he humbled you by letting you
go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and
your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread
alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the
LORD. Deuteronomy
8:3
The word
of God provides us with spiritual food...spiritual "bread" that is
necessary for life. Where do we find that spiritual bread? It is the word of
God—the Bible. Another reason to be reading God's word every day...and applying
it to our lives. By what bread are you living?
Prayer ~ Lord, give us this day our daily bread—give us the food we need. Show
us not only morsels from Your truth—but generous loaves of truth that reveal
and sustain us with Your Love and Your Grace in our lives. Thank You.
Verse
of Salvation ~ Cry out, "Save us, O God of our salvation! Gather and
rescue us from among the nations, so we can thank your holy name and rejoice
and praise you." 1

Friday’s
Feast at the King’s Table
Give us today
the food we need…give us this day our daily bread.
One of my
family’s favorites, usually over the holidays, has been 60-minute rolls.
60
Minute Wheat Rolls
2 pkgs.
Active quick-rise dry yeast
3 Tbsp. sugar or honey
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. powdered milk (optional)
1 1/2 c. hot tap water
2 Tbsp
softened butter or olive oil, at room temperature
4 to 4 1/2 c. unsifted flour (half wheat and half white)
Thoroughly
mix 1 cup flour and dry ingredients. Gradually add water and butter to dry
ingredients and beat 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Add remaining flour
and beat to make soft dough. Place in greased bowl, cover, and rise 15 minutes.
Turn out onto floured board. Knead about 5 minutes, until not sticky. Shape
dough into rolls and place on greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise again
for about 15 minutes. Bake at 400 degree Fahrenheit oven about 12 minutes
(depends on the size of the rolls). Makes 16-20 rolls.
