Are You Going to Run Towards God or Away From Him?

There are six things the LORD hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family. Proverbs 6:16-19

Meditate. What does God like or dislike?

Jesus came to save mankind from their sins.
A baby in a manager.
Will you run to Him...and bring Him a gift?

Jesus came to save man from his sins.

And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21

What does God consider as sin—sinful behavior? Solomon writes about this in the focus verses above in Proverbs where he specifies things that God hates or detests.

Haughty eyes indicate a prideful attitude where someone exults themselves. Exult themselves! It is God that we should be glorifying! No wonder God dislikes that!

A lying tongue and a false witness who pours out lies. One of the Ten Commandments is about lying—giving false testimony. No matter who or what a person is tempted to lie about, it is wrong. That is a sin.

You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16

Hands that kill the innocent. Another statement that is directly from the Ten Commandments.

You must not murder. Exodus 20:13

A heart that plots evil. Jesus taught that to think about something…that is plotting…is the same as doing it. It doesn’t matter if it is anger or thoughts about murder—it is the same.

You have heard that our ancestors were told, 'You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.' But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. Matthew 5:21-22

Feet that race to do wrong. Doing wrong is wanting to cause injury, calamity, misery, or just plain evil actions. Wrong choice! To do anything evil is to do the opposite of good—the opposite of what God approves. If the person is racing, they are moving just as fast as they can. Hurrying to do evil makes it even worse. It shows that they like to do that, they desire it. They’re in a hurry to do evil or wicked actions. Again, wrong choice.

A person who sows discord in a family. Discord or conflict, disputes, arguments, cacophony. Stirring up bad feelings in a family is a sad state of affairs. Brothers…and sisters…should support and encourage each other. Love should begin with family. What better place to show you care about others than at home? Love your neighbor…your family…as yourself. Additionally, another of the Ten Commandments directs that we are to honor our father and mother. Causing strife is not honoring anyone.

Jesus replied, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Matthew 22:37-39

This group of verses from Proverbs is just one example of a list of things that God dislikes that could be considered sin. Read the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 for a further list of what God expects…of how people are to live.

Jesus came to save mankind from their sins…from the evil that separates us from God. Now you know. Are you going to run towards God or away from Him?

Prayer – Lord Jesus, You taught us what to do, how to think and live to please our Heavenly Father. Thank you. Now please give us…give me…the strength to follow through and do what is right, good, true, and honest.

Verse of Salvation ~ The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Romans 13:12
