LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them. You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so mere people can no longer terrify them. Psalm 10:17-18 (Underlined for emphasis.)
Meditate.
Consider God’s comfort of the helpless in scripture.
The Psalmist, likely David, was pleading with God, encouraging Him to help the helpless—to comfort them. Do we know the hopes of the helpless? Would those just be the orphans and the oppressed—or would it include the homeless, too? Do you consider the homeless oppressed people? There are some homeless who actually choose that lifestyle. But most of us are accustomed to a roof over our heads, a warm bed in which to sleep, running water in the kitchen and bathroom—where we can shower daily, choices of schools for our children, a closet full of clothes, more than one pair of shoes, a couple of coats and endless other things including lights, heat, and electricity to run all our gadgets. We generally take these things for granted. Personally, I thank God every day for my home, family, food, and friends. Do you? This Psalm tells us that the Lord knows the hopes of the helpless and trusts that He will help them.
As
we go about our daily lives, we can be the hands and feet of our Lord—helping the helpless and homeless in some small way—even if it is just a bottle of water and a new pair
of socks given to a person with a sign standing on the street corner near our
favorite grocery store. The choice is ours—not to be homeless, but to help them,
comfort them, just as Jesus would. How will you do that today?
Prayer
– Lord Jesus ~ You
are my Savior. I repented of my sins and established a relationship with You, the
King of kings, Lord of lords. I trust that You will not only comfort each of
us, but You will strengthen us, giving us peace to pass on to others as we endeavor
to understand their hopes.
Verse
of Salvation ~ Such hope [in God's promises] never disappoints us, because
God's love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy
Spirit who was given to us. While we were still helpless [powerless to provide
for our salvation], at the right time Christ died [as a substitute] for the
ungodly. Romans
