Are You Developing Endurance?

Like the camel--we can endure the desert.
Keep plodding along.
Look to the Lord for help along the way.
Endurance. Steadfastness, consistency, patiently waiting, and perseverance. Paul tells us that we’ll develop endurance when, not if, we have problems. Problems, traumatic events, and trials are just part of life. We can’t escape them—but how we react to them is the key here. Paul writes that we should “rejoice.” When was the last time you felt joy when you had a problem? Usually, that is the last thing we think of when something comes up that changes our plans, annoys us, or creates a disturbance in our lives. The way we are to react is to be steadfast, patient, and just persevere. Don’t give up or give in to the problem.

I remember once pitching a fit—as a young teenager—when I had an insurmountable problem. It horrified a couple of people who were in the area. I was embarrassed that I overreacted. It may have been a turning point in my life to get my anger under control. Did it teach me to endure? Maybe, and it definitely strengthened my character. I wasn’t a Christian at that point in my life. If I had known to turn that situation over to the Lord, it would have been a spiritual characteristic transformation—not just an emotional awareness. Now, when I get a sticky problem, I ask God for help.

There are many scriptures that we can depend on for encouragement and guidance that are associated with endurance. Here are a few:

-        We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy….Colossians 1:11

-        May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:5

-        For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. James 1:3-4

I love that we have such encouragement from God—training us to be like His Son, Jesus. Jesus endured so much—during His daily life with the unbelieving disciples, the disrespectful Pharisees, and the Jewish rulers who were responsible for having Him nailed to the cross. It is Jesus who gives us the hope of salvation. He provided the very means—His obedient self-sacrifice—that we can be saved from our sins and sinful nature.

Rejoice! We can be glad that we have God’s love and the Holy Spirit to daily guide us as we develop endurance.

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. Romans 5:3-5

Prayer – Lord Jesus, thank you for Your example. You were fully human and endured so much. Much more than we will likely ever have to experience—but we can stand firm and endure whatever comes our way knowing that You are with us. Knowing that You have promised that You will never leave us or forsake us. The Holy Spirit will be right there with us…always. Thank You.

Meditate on endurance.

Verse of Salvation ~ So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen. 2 Timothy 2:10
