Have You Seen a Burning Bush?

Have you ever seen a burning bush? Depending on lots of conditions, including moisture, wind, heat of the fire, a bush can catch fire and burn into ashes very quickly. The true terror is that it can spread quickly to other bushes, trees, structures. Here Moses sees a bush burning—but not turning into ashes. Then the LORD, or an angel of the LORD, who according to commentaries and study Bible notes, is actually Jesus Himself. They have a conversation in which I amazed when Moses disputes and protests what God is asking him to do. It was an overwhelming request—but Moses had the nerve to complain to God, objecting to the task that God is giving him to do. God has prepared him for just such a time as this—but he just doesn’t want to see that. Is there a time when God has told you to “go” and do something that likely He has uniquely prepared you to do? Maybe it is going with a Missions group to show the Jesus film; lead a Bible study; teach a Sunday School class—for five-year olds or Senior Adults; clean and organize clutter; serve the homeless; or pass out bottled water during a fund raising race. No matter what the task, are you ignoring the gifts, talents, and experiences that God has given you to prepare you to serve Him? Go or don’t go and reap the consequences. Decide for yourself.

The Burning Bush

There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn't burn up. "This is amazing," Moses said to himself. "Why isn't that bush burning up? I must go see it." When the LORD saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, "Moses! Moses!" "Here I am!" Moses replied. "Do not come any closer," the LORD warned. "Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God. Then the LORD told him, "I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land. It is a land flowing with milk and honey—the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live. Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them. Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt." But Moses protested to God, "Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?" God answered, "I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain." But Moses protested, "If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what should I tell them?" God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you." Exodus 3:2-14

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You are the “I AM” that spoke to Moses. The bush didn’t burn up—how can that be? You are the creator—all powerful. You can control even the fire of a burning bush. Please control the fires raging in California now. In Your mercy give wisdom to those battling the blazes to do what they can to bring that inferno to an end. Anoint those who have lost loved ones, homes, and businesses with Your peace as they face their losses. Thank you for hearing our prayers.

Meditate. Consider God’s command to “go” in scripture.

Verse of Salvation ~ Because of God's grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15
