As Jesus and the disciples continued on
their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named
Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord's feet,
listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she
was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, doesn't it seem unfair
to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come
and help me." But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are
worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being
concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from
her." Luke 10:38-42

Boiled Beef with Dill Gravy and Dumplings A tasty meal that takes time. A Martha Meal. |
Jesus went to the home of His friends where
He spent some time teaching and just fellowshipping with His followers, but Martha
was distracted. Have you ever been distracted so that you were focusing on
something about which no one else seemed to show concern? Mary was interested
in only one thing—Jesus’ teaching. Martha was preparing a big meal—and she felt
she needed help. She felt it was unfair for her to do all the work.
Details…details…details. Don’t lose your cool, Martha. Mary has chosen well. If
Martha chose a simpler meal she would have spent less time in the kitchen…and
more time at the Lord’s feet.
When you have dinner guests…what is on the menu?
An elaborate meal? Or a simple meal so that you can spend more time with your
guests? If Jesus were your guest, would you keep it simple so you can spend
time with Him?
Prayer
~ Lord Jesus, Help me to keep my life…even my meals…simple and focused on the
important thing in life—You. You advised Martha: keep it simple. Mary focused
on the one thing that was worthy of her attention. You.
