We Had Hoped He Was The Messiah

That same day two of Jesus' followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing him. He asked them, "What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?" They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, "You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn't heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days." "What things?" Jesus asked. "The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth," they said. "He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago." Luke 24:13-21

Can you imagine walking along a dusty road with a stranger and telling him about Jesus—only to discover that the stranger was Jesus Himself. Jesus was a great teacher, prophet, leader, and healer, a pure and sinless man, who had been handed over by the Temple priests to be crucified by the Romans.

The facts have not changed in over two thousand years. Jesus was pure and sinless. He fed five thousand and then three thousand men and their families from just a few fish and some small loaves of bread. There were numerous people who received healing of their bodies, soul and spirits. He walked on water and calmed a raging storm. The Jews were looking for a Messiah—to save them from the Roman oppression. Yet Jesus was not recognized as the Messiah. He was condemned to a Roman death of crucifixion by Jewish priests and religious leaders. Then miraculously He was raised from the dead after three days in a borrowed tomb.

Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God…that He is God Himself?

Prayer ~ Jesus, You are amazing. I worship and adore You. I would have loved to have been one of those walking and chatting with You along the road to Emmaus—but I will just have to wait now until you call us home to Heaven.
