February 9 - We Brought Nothing Into This World….

But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:6-9

God will bless the godly. We don’t have to give up contentment to dream big, as long as we’re dreaming God’s dream. Keep your eyes on God and seek His will for your life, that will help you lead a godly life. If we are trying to be like Jesus—to have His character traits, then the godliness will just follow…and we can find contentment in that. We come into life with nothing…and we will go out of this life with only memories and relationships…nothing tangible.

Personally I don’t want to be rich…or famous. To get rich, I’d either have to have some super talent…like a football player or be a movie star…or start my own business. Starting and running a growing business is a lot of work…and can be very risky. It can also be lucrative. But lucrative at whose expense? It can create a struggle for marriages, families, and may even result in the loss of friends as more and more time is invested in the business rather than relationships. That is not in God’s plan for me. He wants me to invest in relationships—in my family and friends.

Training Tip – Talk about what being “content” means to your children. Remind them of the story of the Prodigal Son—who wasted his inheritance on wild living. That is an example of a young man who was not content with what he had. Talk about his choices. Give them the choice of time with you or a few dollars that they can spend as they wish. Hopefully they’ll choose to spend the time with you.

Lord – As we face choices in our lives, please give us insight to make choices like You would make. Help us to be content and not fall into temptation with foolish desires that could result in our destruction.
