Jacob had just worked for Laban for twenty
years—fourteen for his wives and then six for his flocks. When Jacob and his
household left Laban’s home, Laban came after them accusing Jacob of stealing
his daughters, grandchildren, flocks and household idols—but God protected
Jacob and his tribe. Ultimately Laban and Jacob formed a covenant and were
committed to never harming each other. In Genesis 31:49, Laban proclaimed a
mizpah that is frequently used as a benediction, "May the LORD keep watch between us to make sure that we keep this
covenant when we are out of each other's sight…” (NLT), or as we may know it…May the Lord watch
between me and you while we are absent one from another. That is a great
commitment to remember with our families. May the Lord watch over us when we
are apart from each other…everyday and whenever someone has to go away on a
business or other necessary trip. We want each other to be safe…and for us not
to wish harm on each other ever.
Training
Tip – Always part with good feelings. Make sure that as they kiddos go off to school…and
Dad or Mom to work or meetings…that all hearts are at peace with each other.
Hugs are always a good way to part whether it is for hours or days—looking each
other in the eye and declaring your love for each other will create a lasting
memory of peace and love.
Lord – Help me to
create a feeling of commitment with each of my family members so that they will
know that they are loved…by me and by You.
