Do Rules Seem Wise to You?

You have died with Christ, and He has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, "Don't handle! Don't taste! Don't touch!"? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person's evil desires. Colossians 2:20-23

We don’t “see” the spiritual powers. Remember what Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus concerning the unseen world. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12. We need to put on our spiritual armor…to fight the spiritual battle. We can’t seem to conquer evil on our own, but with God all things are possible.  Jesus looked at them (His disciples) intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God." Mark 10:27. God’s power sets us free. Free from spiritual powers and evil desires. How cool is that? To me that is the mark of ultimate love. God is telling us…don’t worry, I’ve got you covered on this one. We just have to do our part. Be strong. Put on God’s armor. Stay alert. Pray persistently. 

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of

God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. Ephesians 6:10-18.

God has told us what to do. Do His rules seem wise to you? We just have to do our part.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I continue to pray to You, although I can’t see You. I know You are near…and that it is You who fights the spiritual battles—my spiritual battles. Help me to follow Your rules and Your wisdom, not that of the world. You have set me free. Free to be Your child and show others Your love.

Wisdom in Repentance

From then on Jesus began to preach, "Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near." One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee,

He saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people!" And they left their nets at once and followed Him. A little farther up the shore He saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And He called them to come, too. They immediately followed Him, leaving the boat and their father behind. Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. Matthew 4:17-23

Jesus went to the synagogues in Galilee, proclaimed the gospel of the Kingdom, and healed people of every disease and sickness. News spread and people came with diseases, pain, demons, epilepsy and paralysis. He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him.

When we visited Israel our tour guide and Bible teacher in Israel gave us insight into Jesus’ message, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Literally, it is in your hand. Jesus wanted people to liberate themselves, to repent from their sins. He was disappointed that people didn’t take the responsibility. It is people’s responsibility.

In the Old Testament people could not get near God or they would die because of their sinful nature. The blood of Jesus cleanse us—so that we can come near God. God created us so that He can have an object for His love. God is love.

In the synagogues Jesus taught as Pharisees. He used text to help them understand God. This opens the way of wisdom and knowledge. Who taught the Rabbis? Yahweh. People learned from the Rabbis, discovered knowledge for themselves from the Torah or from God through the prophets. In Jesus we have all three. God, prophet and priest.

Jesus is calling us even today to “Repent” on a daily basis…take every thought captive. The blood of Jesus “washes us”, but we have to acknowledge our sins and His forgiveness. As you feast on this “spiritual” food for today, will you allow God to give you insights into your thoughts, motives, and your own responsibility to respond to Jesus, to follow Him as the first disciples and the great multitude did?

Prayer - Lord, I agree with You that I have made mistakes, sinned. I take responsibility for my sins and ask You to please forgive me. Thank You for taking away my sins and help me to live each moment of today in a way that pleases you. Please give me wisdom that I would walk in Your ways and honor You.

Eating Problems?

Don't tear apart the work of God over what you eat. Remember, all foods are acceptable, but it is wrong to eat something if it makes another person stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble. You may believe there's nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don't feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. Romans 14:20-22

There’s wisdom in those words. Don't tear apart the work of God over what you eat. Life isn’t just about eating and drinking…although I often say…We live to eat and eat to live. Our lives focus around our next meal…what we should eat…where we should eat…how much or how little we should eat! Do we ever focus on what spiritual food we should eat today…where we should be when we read God’s word today…how much we should read or study today? Is a chapter enough…or will one verse fill up my spiritual hunger for the day? Do you ever share God’s word on a silver platter…or a bamboo tray?

Prayer ~ Lord, Give us wisdom with food—both physical and spiritual.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

It’s the time of year for tomatoes. How about all those green ones on your tomato plants? Here’s a great southern dish—to honor our family in the South that should not offend anyone's habits or taste buds.

Fried Green Tomatoes

3 medium, firm green tomatoes, unpeeled

Fresh ground Himalayan salt

1 cup flour, regular or a gluten free blend

1 Tbsp Cajun seasoning (optional) or ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 egg

1/3 cup white cornmeal

1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs

1/4 cup peanut oil or other vegetable oil

Cut the tomatoes cross-wise into 1/3 to 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt. Let tomato slices stand for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, place in three separate shallow bowls: the flour and Cajun seasoning (if desired); buttermilk and egg; and bread crumbs and cornmeal.

Heat the oil in a large cast iron skillet on medium high heat. Whisk the egg and buttermilk together. Dip tomato slices in the flour-seasoning mix, then buttermilk-egg mixture, then the cornmeal-bread crumb mix. Fry the coated tomato slices in the skillet for 3-5 minutes on each side or until brown. Set the cooked tomatoes on paper towels to drain. Serve warm as soon as all of them are fried. These are great served with a little Tabasco sauce or Remoulade. Wisdom in the Valley

The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of criticism (from others and from myself), that valley of rejection, I am not afraid—I feel Your love, Jesus. You are guiding me with Your staff—the Holy Spirit. Thanks for always being with me…for never leaving or forsaking me (Hebrews 13:5). I claim that promise—knowing that in Your wisdom You are my shepherd.

Sheep in Israel

The wisdom of the Psalm 23, as described in the book A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller, is that the shepherd gives his all for his sheep. His love, attention, understanding of their habits, desires and needs, and constant commitment to their care are his focus. That is just how Jesus treats us. His sacrificial love and compassion never fails. The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:22-23. God is so good to me. He lifts me up when I am down—just like the shepherd who uses his staff to lift the little lamb up out of a pit. Even though I walk in the valley…I am not alone, abandoned nor mocked by my Lord and Savior—my Shepherd.

Do you feel the love of the Lord…His presence in your life even when you are feeling down?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus—You are an awesome Shepherd. Thank you for revealing to me that not only will You never leave me or forsake me, but You provide all I need and protect me. I am forever grateful. With this reminder of Your love, I am refreshed and renewed.

Follow Him…I Will Follow Him

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow Him. Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. Colossians 2:6-9

It is a wise action to choose to follow Christ. We all have choices every day. We choose how we spend our time, energy, and money. So what are you going to do today? One possibility is to build a relationship with Jesus Christ—to spend time reading His word…the Bible…and getting to know Him. Even reading books by Christian authors, listening to Christian speakers or music can be encouraging in your walk with Christ. Thankfulness. Books have been written on that subject. One of my favorites is One Thousand Gifts – Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp. She encourages her readers to be thankful for three things a day and to record those in a thankful journal. I am grateful that she took the time to write that book and encourage others. Another inspiring thing is the song that includes the lyrics, “Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son”. Giving thanks is the sort of thing that people think about in the fall…when it is Thanksgiving time. But with God, all days are Thanksgiving Days. We can choose to be thankful…and grow close to God…or not. It is our choice.

Like Joshua…But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.  Joshua 24:15.

Choose to put your roots down deep in God's spiritual truths. Be like the tree firmly planted by the river. They (those who meditate on God’s word day and night) are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. Psalm 1:3. They prosper. Isn’t that what we all want to do? We want to be spiritually content and successful, filled with joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, please give us grace that we would be content to do your will and not our own. Fill us once again with the Holy Spirit that we would have joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness all the days of our lives. Protect and guide us that all we do would bring You peace and contentment.

Don’t Be Deceived - Listen

I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally. I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God's mysterious plan, which is Christ Himself. In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments. Colossians 2:1-4

Paul wrote to the church at Colessea and here instructed them to send the letter on to the church at Laedicoea.  Sort of an email forward of today. How often do you do that? When this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. Colossians 4:16 (HCSB).

This letter was meant to encourage--love one another...just as Jesus taught. In addition, as Paul already explained, Christ is for everyone--not just for the Jews. What an awesome gift to the Gentiles. Jesus is the source of eternal life in addition to all spiritual wisdom and knowledge. Don't be deceived.

Other wisdom may sound good--or look pretty--like this mushroom, but it can be deadly. Be careful of the knowledge and wisdom that you trust--that you rely on to guide you. Step by step look to the Lord.  Rely on the wisdom of Jesus.  It is pure. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy. James 3:17 HCSB

Later on John was given these words to write as recorded in Revelation 3:14-22.

Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: “The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Originator of God’s creation says: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t know that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked, I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be committed and repent. Listen! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and have dinner with him, and he with Me. The victor: I will give him the right to sit with Me on My throne, just as I also won the victory and sat down with My Father on His throne. "Anyone who has an ear should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”

The church at Laodicea became indifferent, blasé, complacent, maybe just uncaring. They had been told that Jesus Christ was the source of wisdom and knowledge--and they shouldn't be deceived. They went beyond being fooled to just not caring. Not fired up about sharing Christ with others--but not cold either.  Hmmm. How can that be? But apparently that is how they were. Are we any different today? Seek Jesus first--with passion. Listen up.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, may we never be complacent about You--Your power and Your love.

Christ for the Gentiles 2

This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God's people. For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory. So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. Colossians 1:26-28

Paul wrote about this "mystery" to the church at Ephesus and now he writes about it to the church in Colossae. Actually these letters were written about the same year (61 AD) while Paul was in prison in Rome. The "mystery" is that the Gentiles were chosen to be part of God's family, too. 

Christ is for everyone, not just the Jews. This encouragement was like a lighthouse shining a beam of truth out into the world. Jesus Christ is the light to the world. He said..."I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life."John 8:12 (HCSB). Can you follow that light...and share Him with others?

Prayer ~ Dear Jesus--Your light shines brightly in my life. Shine through me to show others the way to You--to eternal life with You.

Live Wisely

So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. - Ephesians 5:15-17

Be wise. Live like those who are wise. Build bridges--relationships with others who are seeking God. Build a strong relationship with God. The first thing in developing a real bond with anyone is to get to know them--to really know what they think and what they prefer to do--their aspirations in life--goals and dreams. 

To know God we can read and really study His Word. Good goal for each of us--to daily be in the Word. Do you have a plan? That is a wise decision. It would be a foolish and thoughtless action to ignore God and His guidelines for living. How can you understand what the Lord wants you to do unless you communicate with Him?

God was telling the Church at Ephesus--as well as us--that the days are evil. We can see that around us with the violence and  terrorism  occurring everyday. Make the most of every opportunity to proclaim the eternal love of the Lord...the power and mercy of God. Tell someone today how God is working in your life. Reflect on the hope that God gives you. 

Prayer ~ Lord God, guide what I think, say and do that I may live wisely. I want my life to honor you and bring you glory.  May I distinctly see opportunities to share your love and hope with others--and do that.

Battle in the Heavenly Places

God's purpose in all this was to use the church to display His wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was His eternal plan, which He carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord. Because of Christ and our faith in Him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God's presence. Ephesians 3:10-12

God’s plan—His love for everyone in the whole world is so perfect.  Adam and Eve messed up—but God’s plan corrected that. A sacrifice had to be made for that correction. Are you seeing the BIG picture here? I am. God had a plan. Sacrificing His Son, Jesus, so that He could continue the relationship He had established with mankind…which Adam and Eve had broken. Rulers and authorities in the heavenly places? How does that fit in? God is all about the spiritual aspect of life. He created it all…and He has a plan.

For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.  Colossians 1:16 HCSB

Once again we realize that we are in the midst of a spiritual battle. Put on your armor daily, but remember that God is in control. He is all powerful.

You may just want to kick back and relax on these last hot days of summer—but even as you sip your iced tea, stay alert and keep in touch with the Lord. Pray.

Prayer ~ Heavenly Father, Your plan is awesome and we look forward to the day when we will see You face to face in Heaven. Will we be able then to look at You—or will Your brilliance still be too much for our eyes? Help us now to resist evil forces around us—open our eyes and hearts that we would be wary of those forces. We trust You to bring on Your angels to continue to fight for us—we are Your children and we know that You will protect us. We pray in the name of our blessed Savior, Jesus, who is above all and in all. We worship You.

Reputation of Wisdom

I have heard that you have the spirit of the gods within you and that you are filled with insight, understanding, and wisdom. Daniel 5:14

                                                                                                   

Daniel had a reputation. A good reputation that showed he was wise, as well as insightful and understanding. Imagine people recognizing that he had the spirits of the gods in him. This wasn’t just any people, but the Queen Mother and the King of Babylon. Little did they know that he was filled with the Spirit of the One True God. Decisions that the king made ended up cutting his life short (Read Daniel 5) otherwise he may have come to recognize our God as the true God, and his own God. That was not to be.

What kind of reputation do you have? Do people see you as having God’s Spirit in you? Do they attribute your insight, understanding and spiritual wisdom to the Lord?

Prayer ~ Lord, give me grace to see me as You see me and may others see You in me. Fill me fresh today with Your Spirit and Your wisdom that I could be a blessing to others and bring honor to you.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

Daniel was called to the king’s banquet once again there in Babylon. The king very foolishly was drinking wine with his guests out of the very cups that had been taken from the Temple in Jerusalem. Not a wise move. That king was exalting himself and definitely not honoring God. Daniel wasn’t offered rich foods or wine at that banquet, but he was offered a purple robe and gold necklace, if he could read the inscription of the Handwriting on the Wall. Daniel told the king that he could keep the gifts. He made the interpretation, much to the king’s dismay. When the prophetic interpretation came true, that was the end of the king and his reign over Babylon.

God gives life and He takes it away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Water is life giving. Pure water saves lives. Not everyone in the world has pure water. Even Moses and the Israelites encountered water that they couldn’t drink.

When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means "bitter"). Then the people complained and turned against Moses. "What are we going to drink?" they demanded. So Moses cried out to the LORD for help, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the LORD set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him. He said, "If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you." Exodus 15:23-26 NLT  

The water became good to drink, because Moses asked for help and God provided a method of purifying that water. When you need help…ask God. Likewise, listen closely to see if God is asking you to help with water wells for those in impoverished areas of the world where clean water is not available.

Be sure to drink enough water to stay hydrated during this HOT time of the summer. Keep your water pure and uncontaminated. Spiritually, seek the Living Water that Jesus offers. Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.' John 7:38 NLT

Rocky Ground?

Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God's people everywhere, I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called—His holy people who are His rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 1:15-20

There are so many people for whom I thank God for sending into my life—those with strong faith…and even those with faltering, shaky faith—for I pray that God is giving each one of them spiritual wisdom, strength and insight. It is exciting to see them grow and change. Those who have backslidden, I see as those that Jesus spoke about in His sower’s parable. They received the Word, but had rocky soil.

A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it. Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture. ... The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don't have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation. Luke 8:5-6, 13.

May God give those people an extra bit of His spiritual wisdom today and draw them back into His fold.

Where do you stand with the Lord? Is your faith strong? As Paul was writing to the Ephesians there were probably some, like me, who feel strong one day…and in need of a spiritual touch another day. Prayer is an amazing thing. Reading God’s Word and praying it to Him gives us insight into His incredible greatness—although we’ll never totally understand.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19 NASB

I am overwhelmed with His power and love—abounding still more each day.  

Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank You for Your love for us and for giving us spiritual wisdom that we can have even a glimpse of insight into Your incredible greatness.

Blamelessly Efficient

Read Proverbs 14

…having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men. Acts 24:15-16

Proverbs 14 contrasts the foolish and the wise. To be blameless is to be very wise—to follow God’s ways so that your conscience is clear. God created us to know the difference between right and wrong…and that conscience of our usually keeps us in check. Even a four year old will hang his head if he knows he’s done something wrong. How is it that there is still so much crime on the streets around the world? Satan is in control. Don’t let him control your life. Have hope in God. Following Him will result in an eternal life starting here on earth, peace in your heart and joy even in times of trial. Jesus never sinned and we can only hope that we sin less every day—trying to live a holy life. Keep your conscience clear and blameless before God.

Family Summer Activity – Make a couple of flash cards for each of your children. One should say “FOOL” and the other should say “WISE”. For small children you can create cards with happy and sad faces. Give the cards to your children and then read Proverbs 14—but don’t use the word “fool” or “foolish,” or “wise” as you are reading. Then after each verse or portion of a verse let the children hold up a flash card that they think depicts the person in the verse…foolish or wise. Discuss their choices—or simply praise the right choices and move on.

Lord, You are an awesome God. Help us to make wise choices that we would have a blameless conscience before You.

A Wise Plan—For the Right Time

So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. He has showered His kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding. God has now revealed to us His mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill His own good pleasure. And this is the plan: At the right time He will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Ephesians 1:6-10

God is so good. What a plan! We all want to feel loved. Everyone is created with this desire to be loved, but God gave us a choice…to choose Him and His love…or not. His ultimate way to love us was to offer His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for the sin of mankind…for each of us for our sin. All for one…and one for all. And here it is again…God showering us—pouring it over our head and our bodies—with wisdom and understanding. He doesn’t just offer us a glassful—just 8 ounces—but gallons of wisdom poured over us. My cup overflows. Surely  goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:5-6. Forever is a long time. An eternity. That is just what God has promised us…at just the right time He will provide a home—His house—in Heaven for us to live forever with Him. There was a price for that home for us. It wasn’t $325,000 which would give us a fantastic house most anyplace in the United States—but the price was Jesus life—His death on a cross—just for us. That is priceless. Are you worth it? God thought so.

Prayer ~ Heavenly Father, thank you for sacrificing Jesus just for our sin. Oh my. What a plan…what an expense …what a gift…what love. Thank you for your wise plan for all of humanity…and for me. I humbly acknowledge that You are above all…You are good…You are awesome. You are my God. I am eagerly awaiting Your “right time” when Your plan will be fulfilled in heaven and on earth.

Do You Put Up With Fools?

And since others boast about their human achievements, I will, too. After all, you think you are so wise, but you enjoy putting up with fools! You put up with it when someone enslaves you, takes everything you have, takes advantage of you, takes control of everything, and slaps you in the face. I'm ashamed to say that we've been too "weak" to do that! But whatever they dare to boast about—I’m talking like a fool again—I dare to boast about it, too. 2 Corinthians 11:18-21

Paul was writing to the church at Corinth. He goes on to talk about boasting…about his suffering for the Lord…and then on into the next chapter with more boasting, although he says it is not profitable, about visions, revelations of the Lord, and a thorn in his flesh. Very interesting reading—about Paradise and about weakness. But I’ll let you read that for yourself. Back to Paul and the boasting in these verses. The Corinthians think they are so wise. Do you ever think that you are wise? I may think I’m wise about worldly stuff like food, health, or maybe children’s behavior—though they are too unpredictable to have any real wisdom about that. God’s wisdom is pure…But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. James 3:17. Maybe Paul thought the Corinthians were wise because, in this passage, they were willing to yield to others…putting up being enslaved. I certainly strive to be peace loving and through the grace of God have attained a greater level of gentleness than I had at an earlier time in my life. Does that make me wise? Certainly it is God’s wisdom that has guided me…and changed my heart. How do you see God working in your life…giving you His wisdom?

Prayer ~ Lord God, fill us with Your wisdom that we would boast to others about You and what you are doing in our lives. May those around us be blessed as we yield to Your grace…more of You and less of us.

Is the Mystery Solved in Belief?

Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—His plan that was previously hidden, even though He made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. 1 Corinthians 2:6-7

This mystery…the wisdom…is about God’s salvation. A salvation He offered to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles. God loves everyone…For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall have eternal life. John 3:16. It is probably the most known verse in the entire Bible. It takes the mystery out of God’s plan. He opens up salvation—eternal life—the hope of heaven—to all people. God made it rather simple—uncomplicated. We don’t have to climb a mountain, burn incense, chant rote prayers, be reincarnated several times as different animals or people, or do a specific number of good deeds…or any good deeds at all. We just have to simply believe. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9. So where do you stand with the Lord? Is it still a mystery to you…or do you believe? 

Prayer ~ Lord, I believe in You. And I believe that anything is possible if a person believes. Help my unbelief. (From Mark 9:23-24.)

Daniel Interprets Again

There is a man in your kingdom who has within him the spirit of the holy gods. During Nebuchadnezzar's reign, this man was found to have insight, understanding, and wisdom like that of the gods. Your predecessor, the king—your predecessor King Nebuchadnezzar—made him chief over all the magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and fortune-tellers of Babylon. Daniel 5:11

The queen mother was telling the current king of Babylon, Belshazzar, about Daniel who had brilliantly and correctly interpreted the dreams of King Nebuchadnezzar. She seemed to think that the spirit of the holy gods was within Daniel. This gave him insight, understanding and wisdom like his god. She was close to the truth. Daniel’s wisdom was a gift from his God—the one true God. Nebuchadnezzar recognized that Daniel’s wisdom was not only greater than that of his “wise” men, giving him the ability to interpret dreams, but God gave him the gift of administrative skills. Daniel, in respect to his God, took care of his body by not eating rich or fatty foods. Daniel was a valuable asset to the Babylonian empire. Once again now he was called into the king’s presence to interpret a mysterious occurrence. The Hand Writing on the Wall. This has become a cliché in modern society if there is something devastating or evil coming soon. People better see the handwriting on the wall for themselves. Have you ever experienced a message of “The Handwriting on the Wall?” Watch out—it can be a significant downturn as it was for Belshazzar.

 

Prayer ~ Lord God, may we be attentive to what is going on around us that we would be prepared for any coming disaster or calamity in our lives.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

The Book of Daniel doesn’t indicate that Daniel continued to eat a diet of fruits and vegetables, but in order for him to be obedient to the Lord, it is assumed that Daniel ate no fatty foods or sweet treats that would take his focus off of serving the Lord. It is likely that he did eat real fresh whole foods. Fresh healthy foods are not necessarily bland.

At this time of the year fresh fruits and vegetables are so abundant. One of my favorite herbs, growing in a pot by my door, is thyme. I find myself pinching off some of the plant and tossing it into breakfast egg dishes, lunch salad, and supper soup broths, sauces, meat marinades or rubs. It is a versatile herb that fights infection, is anti-fungal and is good for healthy brain function. Once again, God in His wisdom provides us with an amazing culinary herb that we can use not only to enhance the flavor of our food, but to keep us healthy. Enjoy!

Amazed by the Holy Spirit

And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5

The Holy Spirit is powerful and wonderful. He is just there for us…helping us say and do the right things. I’m amazed at some of the things I’ve written. I know that I didn’t come up with those words myself—the Holy Spirit gave them to me. Those words were not clever, whitty or of a verbose vernacular. Just down to earth words to which people like me could relate. And with painting I’ve seen paint flow off my brush and create beautiful pictures that I could not have created myself…it is the Holy Spirit doing it.

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come to His followers after He went to be with His Father—after His ascension. He said…And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. John 14:16. In the passage of scripture John chapters 13-16, Jesus has His last teaching session with His disciples there in the Upper Room during the Last Supper. He tells them more about the Holy Spirit, calling Him the Helper, the Advocate, the Paraclete (in Greek), the Comforter, the Encourager, the Counselor, the Intercessor, the Spirit of Truth and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin, comforts, counsels and encourages us, helping us to know what is best to do. How compassionate is that?! I love God the Father for His wise plan. I love Jesus—for His love and sacrifice. I love the Holy Spirit for His teaching, encouragement, guidance and counsel. What a God!

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. John 14:26

But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate won't come. If I do go away, then I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. ... When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever He receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, 'The Spirit will tell you whatever He receives from me.' John 16:7-8, 13-15

I just feel so loved by God. It makes me want to take care of my body…for my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? 1 Corinthians 6:19. In His indwelling—He lives—to give us the right words to say and guidance that we would do the right things. Do you trust Him to help you? We make choices every day. Do you chose to honor God with your life and love?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, I trust in Your power and love to work in and through me to minister to myself and to those around me. You are such an integral part of the awesome God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I am humbled to know that You live within me. Guide and direct my every thought, word, and action that I would live a holy life, pleasing to You.

Do You Have a Plan?

When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn't use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God's secret plan. 1 Corinthians 2:1

Paul was explaining God’s plan of salvation for the Gentiles. The Good News—the gospel that described that how God loves everyone…not just the Jews and that His Son, Jesus, had given His life in sacrifice for each of them…for each of us. Amazing love. Paul didn’t have to use big words—and we don’t either when we tell others about Jesus…about God’s plan. Plans are good. I remind myself regularly that those who fail to plan…fail. They aren’t going where they should go and doing what they should do…or even want to do…because they’ve no goals or plans. 

Plans are good. Do you have a plan for telling others about Jesus? Without a plan—failure may rear its ugly head…and then it’s all over. The end. The culmination of something very important. Information that is essentially valuable for anyone…for everyone. Without the knowledge of Jesus as the Savior of the world…and for the whole world…someone could easily be lost forever—bound for hell, just because we didn’t have a plan—no significant preparation or even idea of how to tell someone about the most important person in your life—Jesus. Paul didn’t use a fancy vocabulary. He was speaking to new believers in Corinth. He kept his message simple. And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.  Keep it simple—rely on the Holy Spirit to give you the words to say. That is just what Paul did earlier when he wrote to the church at Thessalica. The Holy Spirit will give you words to say. Pray. 

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, give me words to say that would be age appropriate and would bring You honor and glory. It is so important to tell others about Jesus Christ—and we don’t need to go half-way around the world…just next door. Thank You, Jesus, for your sacrifice

Can You Give Wise Advice?

Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don't want you to misunderstand this. ... So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. ... A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 1 Corinthians 12:1, 3-4, 7-8

Spiritual gifts…what a blessing of an idea that God initiated. Giving everyone abilities that allow them to minister to one another is brilliant. A few years ago a small group that I’m a part of took a spiritual gifts assessment. It was very interesting that there were twelve people in the group and all sixteen of the “gifts” were covered. It was determined that someone had a high score for each of the gifts. That would mean that within our group we could minister to each other…and overall to our church at large…with each of the given abilities.

Being able to communicate wise advice…to share spiritual wisdom…that could be understanding the mysteries of the Bible, including theology, or having an ability to speak in proverbs like Solomon. Jesus was even wiser than Solomon--and He was a great communicator.

The gift of wisdom was not one of my highest attributes in the assessment. Giving advice does come easily to me…is it wise advice? That is only for God and the person receiving the advice to decide! Do you give wise advice?    

Prayer ~ Lord, help us to seek You first in all that we think, say and do—that we can apply Your wise advice to any situation in our lives.

How Great is His Wisdom!

Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways! For who can know the LORD's thoughts? Who knows enough to give Him advice? And who has given Him so much that He needs to pay it back? For everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36

God is all knowing—omniscient. His wisdom is above all…He is THE source of wisdom.

Our Lord is great and has awesome power; there is no limit to His wisdom. Psalm 147:5 NET. He is above all—all powerful. We just can’t question His knowledge or power. When Job was in distress—being challenged by Satan—God spoke to Job using a series of questions. See Job 39-41. In that discussion God said…Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? Job 38:2 NLT. No one can even come close to being as wise as God. If we try, we merely come across as ignorant.  Being called IGNORANT by my brother as a child cut me to the core. No one wants to be called stupid or ignorant. I thought I was smart—not as smart as my sister, but certainly NOT ignorant. I definitely wouldn’t question God’s wisdom. Could you? Sometimes when we pray, we ask God for things in such a way that it almost seems like we are telling Him what to do…but we can’t advise Him anymore that we can give Him power. Remember He has all the power. We can only live to love and serve Him, obeying His commands and directions. That’s all I can do. Everyone has to make their own choices on how they will live…to give God the glory…or not. What is your choice today?

Speaking to the Christians in Rome and to all who read his letters through the ages, Paul said…Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in His kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. Romans 11:22.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I acknowledge that You are the Source of all Wisdom, Power, Grace and Love. I trust in You, Lord, with all my heart; I do not depend on my own understanding. I seek Your will in all I do, knowing that You will show me which path to take. I am not impressed with my own wisdom. Instead, I respect and honor You, Lord, and I turn away from evil. Proverbs 3:5-7.
