Nourishment Comes From Doing the Will of God

Fruit for Eternal Life

Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, "Rabbi, eat something." But Jesus replied, "I have a kind of food you know nothing about." "Did someone bring him food while we were gone?" the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. You know the saying, 'Four months between planting and harvest.' But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! You know the saying, 'One plants and another harvests.' And it's true. I sent you to harvest where you didn't plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest." John 4:31-38

Meditate. Consider Jesus as human and divine.

We all get tired and hungry. Jesus did, too. The disciples left Him at Jacob’s Well to rest while they went into Sychar to get something to eat. When they returned, He didn’t seem to want to eat. Rabbi, eat something. His food was spiritual. I love that Jesus explains this…and talks about finishing God’s work.

My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

This was early in His ministry, but He is looking ahead—saving the lost people of Sychar. Doing God’s will. How often do we wonder if what we are doing is “in God’s will,” and how do we determine that? Jesus focuses on God’s will throughout His ministry.

For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father's will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day." John 6:38-40

Doing God’s will. Love God and love others. Believe in His Son. I think that sums it up.

What do we learn about Jesus from this scripture passage? Jesus came to earth to do the will of His Father. To be obedient. Plant. Water. Harvest. From where does your nourishment come?

Prayer – Lord Jesus, You’ve been a great example to us—from the beginning of Your ministry, all You wanted to do was the will of our Heavenly Father. Can we do any less?

Verses of Salvation ~ Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. ... "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. ... "I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep. John 10:9, 11, 14-15
