Mission Completed

Prayer – Lord Jesus, You did it! You obediently did what You came here to do. We are released from the bondage of sin…the oppression of our selfish lives. Our hearts are cleansed by the power of Your blood. Many were healed…of sickness, lameness, and blindness. All who repent receive clean hearts. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You!

It is Finished.

Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty." A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. John 19:28-30

Meditate. Consider Jesus purpose while He was on earth.

This was not an impossible mission…but a difficult one—even for Jesus. When He went to the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed, “Let this cup pass from me….” But that wasn’t God the Father’s will for Jesus’ life…or ours. So, He went to the cross.

I find a bit of irony in the story of the Passover…and the cross. When God gave Moses and the Israelites the instructions for the Passover, He told them to use a hyssop branch to put the blood of the lamb on the door posts and lintel. Then as Jesus hung on the cross, the soldiers used a hyssop branch to raise a sponge of sour wine for Jesus to drink. Hyssop branches. It is also mentioned in Psalm 51 where David wrote about his heart being cleansed from sin after his affair with Bathsheba.

Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in secret You will make wisdom known to me. Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; Cleanse me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness, Let the bones You have broken rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins And wipe out all my guilty deeds. Create in me a clean heart, God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:6-12 NASB20

Hyssop is in the mint family and it is considered to be a wild form of marjoram that was used in religious and purification rituals in Biblical times. We don’t need to use hyssop to sprinkle blood on the frame of our door, but we still need to ask God to purify our hearts. Give us clean heart and restore a right spirit to us. Jesus gave us the opportunity to be renewed. Don’t pass it by. He was thirsty…and was given vinegar to drink, but that was not a thirst quencher. Then He bowed His head, breathed His last breath, and released His spirit. His mission was complete.

Verse of Salvation ~ So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord's kindness. 1 Peter 2:1-3

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table (Good Friday)

Jesus was given sour wine which is actually vinegar. Who drinks vinegar? A little bit—but just a little splash—of apple cider vinegar mixed with water is good for a lot of things. It is a natural probiotic, so it is generally good for gut health and the immune system. It also contains antioxidants that some people claim will prevent or treat esophageal cancer, but like any claims for weight loss, skin infection treatment, or glycemic control, those should be taken lightly and discussed with your medical professionals.

It is not likely that the sour wine Jesus was given was made from apples. Jesus lived in the Promised Land…a grape growing area in which the Lord Himself had brought the Israelites to live.

For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills. It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey. Deuteronomy 8:7-8

That was the land of milk and honey…and wine that made the heart glad. The sour wine that Jesus tasted was His last food…until He ate fish with His disciples after His Resurrection. Wait. There is more to His story. His Mission continues after His Resurrection…after His Ascension.

Passover Begins

Prayer – Lord, Passover is one of the greatest festivals and feasts of the year and You made this last one before Your crucifixion extra special. We recognize the ultimate sacrifice that You made—fulfilling the initial sacrifice of animals to create coverings for Adam and Eve when they disobeyed God and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Evil was let loose in the world. On the cross You won that spiritual battle against the principalities of the world—and now we await the final war as described in Revelation—but we know, You win! Hallelujah!

Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John ahead and said, "Go and prepare the Passover meal, so we can eat it together." "Where do you want us to prepare it?" they asked him. He replied, "As soon as you enter Jerusalem, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters, say to the owner, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal." They went off to the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there. When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. Jesus said, "I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won't eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God." Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come." He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me." After supper he took another cup of wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you." Luke 22:7-20

Meditate. Consider Passover, an eight-day celebration, which actually started at sundown yesterday.

The first Passover occurred in Egypt when God set the Israelites free from their Egyptian slave masters. There were actually the ten plagues that God imposed on the Egyptians, with the last being the death of the first-born, while the angel of death passed over the Jewish homes that had lamb’s blood sprinkled on their door posts. The plagues, as recorded in Exodus 7-12, are remembered in recitation of the events as part of the Passover Seder. They include:

1. Blood

2. Frogs

3. Lice

4. Flies

5. Pestilence

6. Boils

7. Hail

8. Locust

9. Darkness

10. Killing of the firstborn.

The Sacrificial Passover Lamb

The plagues were generally associated with Egyptian idol worship of their gods, rather than worship of the one true God. The plagues demonstrate to the Egyptians the power of God and strengthened the faith of the Israelites. Read for yourself this powerful portion of God’s word and seek out an understanding of God’s choice in these particular punishments. This last plague, the Passover, is significant also because it represents an animal sacrifice, that of an unblemished lamb, to take away the sin of the world. Jesus became the ultimate sacrificial lamb when He was hung on the cross. After that, there was no need for animal sacrifice.

Part of the Passover is commemorated with the unleavened bread and wine, eaten just as the Israelites did before the great exodus from Egypt. Note that Jesus not only included this in His last Passover meal, but He personalized it…"This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me." After supper he took another cup of wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you." My body. My blood. No one else could or had made that statement before or since. Do you identify Jesus’ statement as His sacrifice for you personally? Once again, Passover has begun.

Verse of Salvation ~ All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. 1 Peter 1:3-5

What Do You Think About the Messiah?

Prayer – Lord, those pesky Pharisees…they just wouldn’t give up on trying to trick You, but You were terrific and they couldn’t answer Your question! Help me to be like You, always ready with the right words. Please provide me, my family and friends with wisdom not to be deceived…or to not be clear to others when sharing the Gospel…but to be ready when You return.

Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They replied, "He is the son of David." Jesus responded, "Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah 'my Lord'? For David said, 'The LORD said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.' Since David called the Messiah 'my Lord,' how can the Messiah be his son?" No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions. Matthew 22:41-46

Meditate. Read God’s word and listen to what He is saying.

The Pharisees, and earlier the Sadducees, were continually challenging Jesus, trying to trick Him up so that they could accuse Him of a wrong doing and arrest Him. They were not the sort of people you’d want to have for friends or to be like. Jesus was recognized as a great teacher and thought by some to be a prophet…but He was more than that. He was the Messiah. He even told the women at the well in Samaria that He was the Messiah. Straight outright in one of His I AM statements.

The woman said, "I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then Jesus told her, "I AM the Messiah!" John 4:25-26

He didn’t declare to everyone just Who He Was…she was privileged. She told others in her town of Sychar what He had told her about herself…and challenged them to consider if He could be the Messiah. Wasn’t she listening? He told her straight out, "I AM the Messiah!" If someone told you that, would you believe him? Be careful. Jesus told His disciples…and us…

"Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah.' They will deceive many. ...Then if anyone tells you, 'Look, here is the Messiah,' or 'There he is,' don't believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God's chosen ones. See, I have warned you about this ahead of time. "So if someone tells you, 'Look, the Messiah is out in the desert,' don't bother to go and look. Or, 'Look, he is hiding here,' don't believe it! For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.” Matthew 24:4-5, 23-28

So, be ready. Don’t be deceived and start looking around for Jesus in all the wrong places. Look for Jesus in the word of God. He is the Word of God—and living in Heaven at the right hand of God. He’s gone there to prepare a place for us. He is the Messiah. There is so much to know about Him—read and learn about Him…and then answer the question…what do you think about the Messiah?

We Don’t Know

Prayer – Lord, I don’t know all there is to know about You, but I do know that You have authority and power to heal the blind and lame. You are amazing…and I know that many people look to You for answers to their health issues. The biggest question though is “Why is there pain and suffering in this world?” That would be followed by “Why don’t You heal everyone who calls upon Your name?” I trust You have the answers and that some of these issues are just our trials here on earth. Give us—and those suffering—strength to endure.

By whose authority did John baptize in that river?

When Jesus returned to the Temple and began teaching, the leading priests and elders came up to him. They demanded, "By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?" "I'll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question," Jesus replied. "Did John's authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human?" They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask us why we didn't believe John. But if we say it was merely human, we'll be mobbed because the people believe John was a prophet." So they finally replied, "We don't know." And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things. Matthew 21:23-27

Meditate. Consider God’s wisdom and knowledge. He knows everything.

Both Jesus’ and John’s authority was questioned by the Pharisees. But focus on how the Pharisees ended their accusations. They said, “We don’t know.” They didn’t know—oh not so. They just didn’t want to admit that they could possibly be wrong…or that either answer they would choose would get them into trouble with someone. Were they seeking an answer? They wanted to trip up Jesus because they didn’t like that He had more power than they had. They just didn’t trust, let alone believe in Jesus. Who gave Him the power? Couldn’t they believe that God gave it to Him and that He was actually their Messiah? No. In my own Bible studies I only noted one Pharisee who believed in Jesus: Nicodemus, a member of the Sanhedrin, who visited Jesus one night and Jesus explained that men must be born again, spiritually. There was also a Sadducee, a Jewish religious sect similar to the Pharisees, named Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the High Council, who actually help remove Jesus’ body from the cross and laid Him in the tomb after His crucifixion. He was a follower of Jesus. These two men were exceptions—the Pharisees and other Jewish leaders in general were antagonistic towards Jesus and His followers. Jesus was not their Messiah, although He came to save all mankind. In their own words, by whose authority were John the Baptist and Jesus doing the things they were doing, “We don’t know.” The Jewish leaders were educated men, but they were relying on their own wisdom—not the wisdom of God. If they turned to the Lord, trusted Him and actually listened to Jesus’ teaching, they would have recognized from whom Jesus and John received their power. Then they wouldn’t have wanted to say…we don’t know.

Verse of Salvation ~ Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it's all nonsense. But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God's weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:21-25

House of Prayer or Den of Thieves?

Prayer – Lord, when will we ever learn? Two thousand years ago the Temple was used as a money making scheme for those telling the Temple visitors that they must have not only the right, pure, and perfect animals for their sacrifice, but they also must have the right Temple coin to use to buy that animal. Is there a difference now? Most churches have fund raising events…for camps, conferences, and missions. Is that similar to those selling sacrificial animals? Please give us wisdom to know the difference and to apply this to our lives.

Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves!" The blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, "Praise God for the Son of David." But the leaders were indignant. They asked Jesus, "Do you hear what these children are saying?" "Yes," Jesus replied. "Haven't you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, 'You have taught children and infants to give you praise.'" Then he returned to Bethany, where he stayed overnight. Matthew 21:12-17

Meditate. Consider the things Jesus said and did during His last week on earth.

So, after His Temple cleansing, healing the blind and lame, He went back to Bethany. That was where His friends, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus lived. That was the Lazarus that He had raised from the grave and it was likely the home to many of the Christians who were witnesses to Lazarus’ resurrection. Their home was likely Jesus’ home away from home.

Den of thieves or house of prayer? What is the Temple to those in Jesus day…and to us today? We don’t do animal sacrifices…and that actually stopped at the Temple in Jerusalem when it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. The sacrifices we offer is not an animal sacrifice, but that repentant heart.

Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you. You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. Psalm 51:15-17

Once again…repenting is God’s desire for us. Jesus’ ministry began…and ended with that. How do we repent? Through prayer. Churches now, equivalent to the Temple or even to Synagogues, are houses of prayer…or should be. We don’t have to be in a church to offer prayers to God—especially since most people go to church only on Sundays…or maybe only at Christmas or Easter. Old and New Testament passages direct people to pray often.

O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls; they will pray day and night, continually. Take no rest, all you who pray to the LORD. Isaiah 62:6

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pray to God constantly—all the time. Prayer is just conversation with God—so keep talking to Him throughout the day…and night, during all your waking hours. That is God’s will for you, if you belong to Christ. Where are you with that? Are you treating God’s house as a den of thieves or a house of prayer?

Palm Sunday

Prayer – Lord, remember the day entered Jerusalem, riding on a donkey? Of course You do since You remember everything! What a bitter sweet day—people were rejoicing…and yet You knew that there was immense pain ahead for You on Your way to the cross. The triumph and the rejection. Thank You, Lord, for being willing to go to the cross—to be willing to be the sacrifice for my sin and the sins of all mankind.

Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey's colt. Zechariah 9:9

Meditate. Consider prophecies fulfilled.

Have you read the prophecy in Zechariah? Beyond this verse above, it talks about peace to the nations and the dominion of the Lord being from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. To the ends of the earth—totally around the world.

Read Ezekiel 4:1-5. A future event happens there.

This event—Jesus’ Triumphal Entry—is recorded in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40, and John 12:12-19. This is the fulfillment of the prophecy given in Zechariah 9:9. The Jews were looking for a great, new political leader as their coming Messiah. They still are looking for their Messiah—and they just didn’t understand that Jesus was the Messiah. He wasn’t a political savior, but a spiritual savior. He came as the Savior of the world…not just for the Jews.

The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, "Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD! Hail to the King of Israel!" Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said: "Don't be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey's colt." His disciples didn't understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him. Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. That was the reason so many went out to meet him--because they had heard about this miraculous sign. Then the Pharisees said to each other, "There's nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!" John 12:12-19

He entered through the east gates as the people shouted, Praise God, Hosanna! That is literally “save us” now! Are people still looking for a Messiah…a Savior? Are you looking for a spiritual or political savior for yourself…or the world? What do you think? Leave a comment below and let everyone know what you think.

Personally, I have already found Jesus as my spiritual savior. He has taken away not only the sins of the world, but my own personal sins. What a great burden was lifted off my shoulders the day I accepted Christ as my Savior. I wasn’t even aware that I was carrying such a heavy load—but I literally felt the weight lifted. It was amazing.

Verse of Salvation ~ For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There's no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. 2 Corinthians 7:10

Beginning of the End

Prayer – Lord Jesus, You headed for Jerusalem, just before Passover, knowing what lay ahead for You…but you went anyway. Give us courage to do the right thing—not to be deceived or discouraged when we face trials and tribulations. How can we ever be like You? You are such an awesome example—You are God. Forgive me, Lord, when I create my own tribulations by not following Your teaching of loving God and loving others.

As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" "Be quiet!" the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, "What do you want me to do for you?" "Lord," they said, "we want to see!" Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him. Matthew 20:29-34

Meditate. Consider Jesus final week on earth.

Even as He neared the end of His ministry, Jesus was mercifully helping others. Here there were a couple of blind men near Jericho and He asked them His classic question:

“What do you want me to do for you?"

He asks us the same question…what do you want me to do for you? Are you ready with your prayer list? Prayerfully consider your response. One of the best ways to pray is to use the acronym ACTS.

A for Adoration

C for Confession

T for Thanksgiving

S for Supplication – the “asking” portion where you respond to Jesus question about what you want Him to do for you.

So, what is it you want Him to do for you? Consider all that He has already done for you—creation and beyond…all the way to the cross. Do you know that He Himself was sinless (1 Peter 1:19) but He took all our sins upon Himself, willingly and obediently because He was asked by the Father, and endured the pain, agony, and rejection of the cross just for us. Think about that the next time you consider disregarding God’s rules and guidance for how we should live our lives. All of them boil down to loving God and loving others as ourselves.

Lord, give me a new life attitude.
A New Beginning
Fresh and pleasing to You.

What is it that I want God to do for me? Change my attitude. It is my biggest continual battle—actually it is a sin. I want to do things my way. I need to change and do things God’s way—treating others kindlier, even if it is just in my thoughts, as well as words and actions. I trust Him to do just that.

Approaching His last week of life as a human, Jesus faced the City of Jerusalem and knew that He was going to have to go to the cross alone. Continue to search the scriptures for promises. Some of the promises that Jesus gave are still to be fulfilled. He is coming back to take us to a new home that He is preparing for us. Will you be ready? There is still more to come. That was just the beginning of the end.
