God Hears – Do You?

Come, let us tell of the LORD's greatness;

Let us exalt His name together.

I prayed to the LORD, and He answered me.

He freed me from all my fears. Psalm 34:3-4

Doesn’t it make you feel good—when someone listens—really listens—to what you are saying? You feel like they care about you…even love you. Do you do the same for others? Do you put down your i-phone and focus your attention on what your kiddos are telling you about their day…or asking about something that is important to them? Do you turn off the TV and read to them when they bring you a book, shoving it into your hands and pleading with you to “read this to me” or ask for a story? Do you actually pay attention to what your spouse, co-worker, or sales clerk is saying when they are just chatting with you?

God promises to hear our prayers. Our prayers are conversation with Him.

I love the LORD because He hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Psalm 116:1

There are possibly billions of people praying to God all at the same time—yet He hears everyone’s prayers. He really listens.

Tip for the day on how to really listen to God or to people with whom we live or work.

STOP what you are doing.

LOOK at the person who is speaking to you.

FOCUS on them.

LISTEN intentionally to what they are saying.

REPEAT back to them what they have said (form of Active Listening).

Training Tip for Parents - Play “Mother May I?” game with your children. This will encourage them to obey…and demonstrate your listening skills as you repeat their requests. You can add some variety by whoever gets to the “Mother” first becomes the “Mother” so that they learn how it is to listen, as well as obey. You can add other skills, like somersaults or crab walks to the mix of big steps, little steps and hops.  (from October 3, 2013 Banquet With The King blog)

Prayer ~ Thank You Lord for hearing my prayers. Help me to be a good listener—like You—and really listen to those around me.

God Will…As Promised

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust Him. For He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with His feathers. He will shelter you with His wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. ... The LORD says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation." Psalm 91:1-7, 14-16

How do you picture God? An old man with a big white beard seated on a throne…or a younger, strong super human figure striding about the heavens? How about a bird-like creature? Once again we read scripture that suggests that God wears feathers. Remember Jesus talking to His followers in Jerusalem… How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me." Matthew 23:37.

So…like the Psalmist, I say to God… For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy. Psalm 63:7 NASB.

No matter what God looks like, the important thing is that He has promised...I will rescue those who love me…I will protect…I will answer…I will be with them…I will rescue them…and give them my salvation. I WILL. God promised and He keeps His promises.

For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations. The LORD always keeps His promises; He is gracious in all He does. Psalm 145:13

The Lord always keeps His promises. What a promise for all who believe in Him.

Prayer ~ Thank You, Lord God, that I believe in You and can trust You with any troubles, sorrows, even joys—all of my life. You are my help—and I sing for joy.

How Do You Celebrate Memorial Day?

So Joshua called together the twelve men he had chosen—one from each of the tribes of Israel. He told them, "Go into the middle of the Jordan, in front of the Ark of the LORD your God. Each of you must pick up one stone and carry it out on your shoulder—twelve stones in all, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you, 'What do these stones mean?' Then you can tell them, 'They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the LORD's Covenant went across.' These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever." So the men did as Joshua had commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan River, one for each tribe, just as the LORD had told Joshua. They carried them to the place where they camped for the night and constructed the memorial there. Joshua 4:4-8

Memorial Day commemorates the beginning of summer for most people in the US. It’s a time for picnics…and a first swim of the year in the pool or lake. But do we consider what Memorial Day really is? It was originally designated at a day to commemorate, remember and honor the American soldiers who died on active duty, beginning with the hundreds of thousands of soldiers lost in the Civil War. Their graves were decorated—so it was sometimes call “Decoration Day.” Now some people use this Memorial Day to remember any of their loved ones who have died. What did God intend for His people to “remember” and commemorate? This scripture passage is about that exciting day when God led the twelve tribes of Israel into the Promised Land—His Promised Land—and how God instructed the people through Joshua to build a memorial. That memorial was to help the children in later generations—and all the people of the earth—to know the power of God.

Then Joshua said to the Israelites, "In the future your children will ask, 'What do these stones mean?' Then you can tell them, 'This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.' For the LORD your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and He kept it dry until you were all across, just as He did at the Red Sea when He dried it up until we had all crossed over. He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the LORD's hand is powerful, and so you might fear the LORD your God forever." Joshua 4:21-24

God wants us—wants everyone, everywhere—to know that He is powerful, mighty and keeps His promises. Is there any doubt about that in your mind? What can you do on this Memorial Day to honor God—to remember the great sacrifice that He made for you? Jesus laid down His life—died a painful and humiliating death on a cross for the sin of all mankind.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. Romans 3:23

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God's laws, and it never will. That's why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to Him at all.) Romans 8:5-9.

How’s your spiritual being? Do you have the Spirit of Christ living in you?

Prayer – Lord God, Thank You for Your plan…for giving the Israelites a Promised Land and for fulfilling that promise as You led them across the Jordan River into that land of milk and honey. Even though all people have sinned—even me—You still offer forgiveness and an eternal home with You in the forever Promised Land known as Heaven. Please accept my honor and deep abiding respect for You as a Memorial for all You have done for the nation of Israel—and for me, my family, friends and neighbors. I love You with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength.

Temple of God

Model of the Temple in Jerusalem.
How are you like a temple?
Do you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

The Temple built by Solomon in Jerusalem was the earthly house of God. His meeting place with mankind. The inner room of the Temple contained the Holy of Holies—with the Ark of the Covenant.

Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the Holy of Holies, under the wings of the cherubim. 2 Chronicles 5:7

Only one priest actually met with God once a year in that Holy place. That priest had to be pure and holy—and then just to be sure a gold rope was tied around his leg so that if God found him unholy and he died, then he could be pulled out. Holiness is unto the Lord. Honor the LORD for the glory of His name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. Psalm 29:2.

Be holy. This is what the Lord requires of us. He makes us holy—but it is our choice—our free will to choose to be holy. God is a gentleman. He won't force us to do anything, although this scripture passage tells us that God will destroy anyone who destroys His temple. What a promise—destruction. We are His temple How do you choose to respond to His offer of Holiness?

Prayer ~ Lord God, You are awesome and holy. Cleanse me and make me pure. Fill me with your holiness.

Safe with God

This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust Him. Psalm 91:2

It is good to recognize where we feel safe. Do you feel safe at home, at work, in your community, in our country—or how about when you are traveling, in an unfamiliar place or in a foreign country?

You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, for the LORD is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. Proverbs 3:25-26

Safety and security bring peace of mind. I find that security in God…knowing that He is always with me…and has promised that He will not leave me or forsake me. Hebrews 13:5. I lock my doors at night…and when I am gone, trusting that God will keep me—and my family—safe.  There is an American proverb that says…It is better to be safe than sorry. To me, that is kind of common sense—but I still feel like I’m trusting God as I sleep securely in my home and travel down the road with my doors locked. Knowing God is nearby providing security and safety gives me peace of mind. He promised that He is our security. Do you feel safe and secure?

Prayer ~ Lord, I am not afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction

that comes upon the wicked, for I am trusting You to provide security and safety for me, my family, friends and neighbors. Thank You.

God is a Shield

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love Your name may be filled with joy. For you bless the godly, O LORD; you surround them with your shield of love. Psalm 5:11-12

What a sweet assurance—God will protect anyone who seeks protection in Him. I picture that mother hen, spreading her wings over her baby chicks, protecting them. Comforting scene. Jesus uses this image in talking with the multitude and His disciples while in Jerusalem. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me." Matthew 23:37. Jesus wanted to shield those who believed in Him from those ready to wage war against Him and His followers. Ages before Jesus, David wrote Psalms and then his son, Solomon, wrote Proverbs that described the Lord as a shield.
David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. He sang: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence." 2 Samuel 22:1-3

God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. Psalm 7:10

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. Psalm 18:2

For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. Psalm 84:11

Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection. Proverbs 30:5
Paul advices us to dress for spiritual success by putting on the armor of God. That includes the shield of faith.
Therefore, put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. Ephesians 6:13-18
How do you see Jesus as a shield for you?

Prayer ~ Lord, be my shield and protect me from the flaming arrows that the devil hurls in my direction. Deflect them with Your love and grace. Be merciful also to my family, friends and neighbors, guiding all of us with Your truthful words. You are my rock, my fortress, and my savior.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
Have you heard of the New Four Food Groups? They are Vegetables, Fruits, Legumes, and Whole Grains. These were introduced by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in 1991. Where has this information been hiding since 1991? I think that we have meat and dairy activates that have been keeping this information from the front line media…or I’ve had my head in the sand for the last 26 years. Most likely the latter! Have you heard of this? So here’s the number of servings we should have per day to provide our bodies with antioxidants to ward off infections and cancer, as well as adequate protein and nutrients to provide for healthy growth.
Fruits - 3 or more servings of ½ to 1 cup
Vegetables – 4 or more servings of 1 cup raw or ½ cup cooked
Legumes (beans, peas and lentils) – 3 or more ½ cup cooked beans, ¼ cup bean spread, 3 oz tofu
Whole Grains – 6 or more ½ cooked, ¾-1 cup dry cereal, 1 slice of bread, ½ tortilla (bagel = 4 servings)
The idea behind these new food groups is that meat and fat affect the hormones in our bodies and cause cancer and inflammatory diseases. Can you live without meat? The fiber in all the fruits and vegetables, as well as the legumes, is also highly beneficial for removing toxins from our bodies. That is the basic info on these four new food groups in a nutshell…but limit the amount of nuts you include in your diet. Some of them are high in oil. The diet is lacking in Vitamin B12 so it is suggested that anyone following this eating regime include a good multivitamin that contains Vitamin B12.

Salvation Begins With Grace

God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8

Hit the Spot with your Thank You!
Petroglyphs in Utah.

Not only is His grace sufficient for me—He provides that to me as a gift. A gift that costs me nothing—well I must humble myself, believe that Jesus IS the SON of God, and accept the gift. But it is a free gift—not one I can earn as some kind of reward. That gift cost God everything. Jesus gave up His life for me—God the Father gave up His only Son for me. That is a pretty big gift. His grace is the beginning of my salvation. It is humbling to think that someone…that God Himself loves me that much that He would sacrifice His Son for my stubborn sin.

Prayer ~ Dear God, my Grandmother taught me to always thank someone for a gift they’d given me. So…Thank You, Lord God…for Your Grace and the salvation of my very soul.

Promise of Grace

Three different times I begged the Lord to take it (the thorn in my flesh…a weakness) away. Each time He said, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:8-10

Like the cables of this bridge--God's grace is powerful.
Ravenel Bridge, Charleston, SC

Grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love. 2 John 1:3. That grace, unmerited favor—undeserved love and attention—that God gives us is a gift—a promise. God is faithful to keep His promises and to shower us with His grace, mercy and peace. Just as He said to Paul, He says to us, “My grace is all you need.” His power is stronger than anything I could ever muster up either physically or spiritually. My weakness right now is a sore shoulder—but I think that God isn’t talking just about physical weakness, although Paul alluded to a physical weakness. Additionally, I think that God shows His power in our lives in our spiritual weakness. It is when I realize that I am NOT strong spiritually that God comes alongside of me and shows me where I need to improve…how I can serve Him by serving others or explains some scripture in a new way that makes sense—or makes me want to know more about Him. His power works best in my weakness. When I’m bullheaded, independent and self-sufficient, not needing anyone or anything, then I am really weak—and need God—even if I can’t see my need for Him—it is there. Have you been there? When do you need God? For me it is always—day-in and day-out. I’m in a 24-hour need and I know that I want less of my own desires and I want more of God—His will and His ways.

Prayer ~ Dear God, Your grace is sufficient—You are all I need in life. I place my body—even in it is aging condition—in Your care and ask that You would renew my mind that I would focus on You spiritually, continually throughout this day. Work through me—that I might serve You by serving others. Thank You. I give You the honor and glory for the power that You show forth in my life.

Are You Eloquent?

Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since Thou hast spoken to Thy servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”
And the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who make him dumb or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth and teach you what you are to say.” Exodus 4:10-12 NASB

Moses had just been called to go rescue the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. Moses saw the burning bush and heard the voice of God. Imagine that. Remove your sandals for you are standing on holy ground. Exodus 3:5. Moses actually spoke to the Lord. A conversation with God—but Moses was not confident in himself and had a lot to learn at that point about the power of God. Don’t send me—I’m not much at talking. I’m not eloquent—not much with a quick retort that would be needed when speaking with the Pharaoh. Eloquence is a big word for a man who stuttered and had no confidence in himself—or in Yahweh, the LORD God Almighty.
Do you ever find yourself at loss for words? We must do as God told Moses. Go and trust Him—that He will teach us what we are to say. As Jesus sent His disciples out to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons, He said…But when they deliver you up (to courts and government officials), do not become anxious about how or what you will speak; for it shall be given you in that hour what you are to speak. For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. Matthew 10:19-20.
Additionally, in His apocalyptic discourse, Jesus said, “It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.” Luke 21:13-15.
Peter taught…
But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 1 Peter 3:14-16.
Have Hope. Trust God. Ask Him to give you the words to say…especially when you are speaking to others about Him.
Prayer ~ Lord, give me the words to say…and the opportunity to speak to others about You…and Your love for them.

God Will Guide You

And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail. Isaiah 58:11
Zion Park - Utah
Do you want someone to show you the way…or are you stubborn and not only won’t ask for directions, but think you can figure out the way to go all on your own? Does this apply to you in everyday living or just when you are traveling? How about your spiritual life? Do you need some guidance there? I sure do. I’ll take all the guidance and direction I can get. There may be times when I don’t so readily accept what is given to me, with my stubborn and rebellious attitude. But it is justified and God knows what I need—direction that points away from rebellion.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised…. For such is God, Our God forever and ever; He will guide us until death. Psalm 48:1, 14.
We have to be careful about taking scripture out of context. I keep reminding myself of that…and then I see just what I’m looking for…but is it what the Lord intended? There are nuggets of wisdom and guidance hidden throughout scripture. We have to look at the big picture—we have to know God in order to know if what we are reading is what He wants us to apply to our lives. In Psalm 48 the sons of Korah wrote about the city of Jerusalem, where God’s Holy Temple is—where God can be praised and worshipped. But again may I remind you…and myself…that we don’t have to be in church or in Jerusalem to worship and praise the Lord. Try it right where you are—right now. Offer Him praise and thanksgiving. Are you in a scorched place? Is it hot…or have you just come through some fire or medical procedure that feels like it is burning bad cells out of you? Then look to the Lord for strength for your bones…for all your body.
Prayer ~ Lord, Thank You for continually guiding me, my family, friends and neighbors, satisfying our desires even when we feel like we’re in a scorching hot place. Please give strength to our bones and our whole bodies. May we feel Your grace like living water pouring over our souls, refreshing us—for Your love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:8.

Promise of Lovingkindness

But Thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth. Psalm 86:15 NASB

Lovingkindness. It is compassion and mercy.

Ethan the Ezrahite sang about God’s lovingkindness in Psalms 89.

I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; to all generations I will make known Thy faithfulness with my mouth. For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever; in the heavens Thou wilt establish Thy faithfulness.” Psalm 89:1-2 NASB

Another Psalmist wrote about lovingkindness in Psalm 117—the shortest Psalm found in the middle of the Bible.

Praise the Lord, all nations; Laud Him, all peoples! For His lovingkindness is great towards us. And the truth of the Lord is everlasting. Praise the Lord! Psalm 117:1-3 NASB

The sons of Korah also praised the Lord and recognized His lovingkindness in Psalm 48.

We have thought on Thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of Thy Temple. Psalm 48:9.

Think on His lovingkindness—His compassion and mercy in your life. You don’t have to be in Jerusalem—or even in any church to focus on God and to praise Him for His lovingkindness in your life.

Prayer ~ Once again Lord, I ask for your mercy and compassion—Your lovingkindness to cover the lives of my family, friends and neighbors. Your mercy is new every morning—and gives us hope throughout our days. I praise and thank you for Your lovingkindness.

Promise of Comfort

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our afflictions so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NASB

Walk a Mile in My Shoes
Comfort Others
Don’t those verses just make you feel like you’ve just had a hug from God? All warm and fuzzy?  He is the great comforter—the source of all comfort…no matter what is bothering us. In Psalm 23 we are reminded that as the great shepherd, Jesus provides comfort for His sheep. Your rod and Your staff, comfort me. Psalm 23:4b. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus promised…Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4. What a wonderful promise! Comfort is important from a merciful and loving God. Can you feel the hug now? Then He expects us to comfort others. Sort of like...in giving you will receive…likewise in receiving…you will give. There have been a few times in my life that I’ve been in distress, grieving a loss, or just depressed and God has come to my rescue—either through scripture, prayer or encouragement from a Christian friend. As likely as not, then I would encounter a person, friend or neighbor who was experiencing a similar discouragement—and I was there for them to provide an uplifting word. The right word at the right time can certainly give hope and reassurance. Have experienced either or both sides of comforting words? Through this do you see God working in your life? Look for an opportunity to comfort others…as you have been comforted.
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus and God, our Father, You have loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, please continue to comfort and strengthen our hearts in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17.

Promise of Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  James 1:5 NIV

There are a lot of wise guys out there…and they are full of wise cracks. Who doesn’t want to be wise? Really wise? Not just smart, but able to apply knowledge and understanding in a way that is useful. I spent a whole year, last year as a matter of fact, focusing on WISDOM in the Bible. God promises to give wisdom to those who seek it…and seek Him.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever. Psalm 111:10 NASB

God tells us to “fear” Him, to honor Him by keeping His commandments. David writes about this “fear” in Psalm 86. Unite my heart to fear Thy name. Psalm 86:11. By this he meant that he wanted to give God his undivided attention—undivided reverence. This “fear” is respect—not to be frightened of something, like being afraid of the dark. God is light—in Him there is no darkness—so have no fear! God is powerful—but that should illicit our respect, not a fearfulness. He is the source of all wisdom—so seek Him, get to know Him and honor Him with your respect, love and attention. Remember, He will give you what you ask for…if you follow His instructions. Wisdom is a good thing to want in your life. Trust Him to give it to you…and be thankful for it. I am.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I am in awe of You. You are so powerful…merciful, and loving. Shower me, my family, friends, and neighbors with Your Wisdom and Grace in our lives. Thank You for hearing my prayers—and for the wisdom You have given me. Please continue to guide and direct my life and to fill me with an abundance of Your precious wisdom.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

My favorite dish to order at any Mexican restaurant is a pork burrito with green sauce. So I’ve tried several different recipes to find one that tastes like that pork in the green sauce. This one is close.

Lomo De Cerdo En Chili Verde - Loin of Pork in Green Chili Sauce

2 Tbsp oil
1 medium onion, chopped finely
2 cloves garlic, grated
2 pounds pork loin, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 lb can of Mexican green tomatoes (tomatillos), with liquid
3 cans mild green chilies, chopped
1  8 oz can or jar of nopalitos – cactus pieces (do NOT add serrano chili if in the jar) – rinse well
Handful of cilantro (coriander) chopped
Salt – fresh ground
Pepper – fresh ground
Sour cream and cilantro for garnish
Heat oil and sauté onion and garlic. Add pork and brown lightly. Add cilantro, tomatillos, chilies and nopalitos.  Simmer for 1½  to 2 hours until the pork is tender soft. Salt and pepper to taste. Use the meat in burritos or serve (6) as soup. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream and fresh cilantro.

Promise of Purpose for Life

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embrace what God does for you as the best thing you can do for Him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12:1-2 The Message

Do you ever think…What am I here on earth for? What can I give God…or do for Him? Paul tells us here that we need to give ourselves to God—not to get so hung up with life in the world of today…but to keep our focus on God. He will show us what He wants from us. But if our attention is on worldly stuff—on being entertained or fanatic about something besides God, we may miss what He has for us. Our spiritual life is what is important to God. Sure we have to live in this world—eat, sleep, work, live…but our focus is to be on God and His world—His life for us.

Can you do that? Let God help you—and Him give you the motivation for your life.

Prayer ~ Lord, let it be. Let my life be a pleasing sacrifice to You—giving me purpose in my life.

Promise to Hear Our Prayers

Then the Lord appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, ‘I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people and  My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now My eyes shall be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. 2 Chronicles 7:12-15 NASB

I
Model of the Holy Temple - Israel
n this classic text God was speaking to Solomon. Solomon had just finished building the Temple as a home for God, consecrated it and spent a week of offering sacrifices to God to celebrate the goodness that God had shown to the people of Israel. It was incredible that when Solomon finished praying (see 2 Chronicles 6:12-42), God sent fire down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and sacrifices…and the glory of the Lord filled the Temple. There were so many animals sacrificed during the dedication that it took a whole week to offer up those 142,000 animals. Amazing. God heard Solomon’s prayer with the first sacrifice.  Likewise, He hears our prayers. Prayer is nothing other than talking to God. In this scripture passage we are shown the requirements for God’s blessing: humble ourselves,  pray, devotion as we seek God, and repentance. So we need to humbly repent and prayerfully seek God. He has promised to hear our prayers. We don’t have to offer blood sacrifices. God showed David that what He wants…
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou will not despise. Psalm 51:17.

Where is your heart? How is your prayer life with God? Are you trusting Him to hear and answer your prayers?

Prayer ~ Thank You, Lord, for Your promise to hear my prayers. I am humble before You…as I seek Your face and wait patiently for Your answers.

Get What You Want

Now that we know we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let us not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to Him and get what He is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help. Hebrews 4:14-16 The Message

What a promise—Jesus has been though all of our human temptations. He is ready to answer your requests. The New American Standard Bible translates these verses as…

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 14-16 NASB.

God knows all about temptation—and He provides the answer.

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

The rays of sunshine allow us access to God's throne.
I love that God is so wise and loving. He knows our weaknesses, but He uses them to make us stronger—to allow us to gain our strength and insight from Him. The key is…we make the choices. We can accept and follow God’s direct…His plan for us…or we can selfishly reject His plans…Him.

The Holy Spirit is telling us through this scripture in Hebrews that we can approach God’s throne and ask for mercy, for help. He will give it to us. What a great promise! I’ll take that—I’ll accept God’s help in my life. Without Him life would be scary, fearful, boring, and oppressive for me. What would your life be without God? If you want more of Him in your life, walk right up to Him and ask Him for what you need. He’s got a plan and an answer for you.
Prayer ~ Thank You, Lord God that you care about me so much…and that You not only listen to my cries for help, but You answer me. You have a plan for me. You’ve said…I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for...Jeremiah 29:11 (the Message). I trust You, Lord, with my life. Show me more of Your plan day by day.

Promise of Truth

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way” Jesus answered, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:5-6

Reenactment of the Last Supper
I AM...the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Jesus was chatting with His disciples, giving them a last lesson during His last Passover meal—the Last Supper before He was crucified. Just before this passage He had told them not to worry, He was going to have a room built for them in His Father’s house in Heaven. No worries about getting there. He Himself was the Way. If they believed in Him—He’d have a room waiting for them. Same goes for us.

He also declared Himself to be the Truth. He had already told them along with Jews who believed in Him…if you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. John 8:31-32. NASB. Know Jesus…know the truth. Are you seeking…looking for the truth in life?  Is there a hunger and thirst in your heart? God promises to give you your heart’s desire and to give you whatever you ask for. Seems pretty simple. God doesn’t make it hard for us—we’re the ones making excuses and building walls between us and God. Like Jericho…the walls for Him have come tumbling down. Do you see the Truth…or walls?
Prayer ~ Jesus, You are the Way, the Truth and the Life...for me. May others see Your truth in me and ask me about You.

Fearless Woman

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She finds wool and flax and busily spins it. She is like a merchant's ship, bringing her food from afar. She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day's work for her servant girls. She goes to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard. She is energetic and strong, a hard worker. She makes sure her dealings are profitable; her lamp burns late into the night. Her hands are busy spinning thread, her fingers twisting fiber. She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy. She has no fear of winter for her household, for everyone has warm clothes. She makes her own bedspreads. She dresses in fine linen and purple gowns. Her husband is well known at the city gates, where he sits with the other civic leaders. She makes belted linen garments and sashes to sell to the merchants. She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness. Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: "There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!" Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised. Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.  Proverbs 31:10-31

Mother's Day Orchid
Love and Blessings!
What an amazing woman! Some people have speculated that this is not just one woman—but the ideal characteristics of many women all rolled into one. Either way, she is God’s ideal woman. Do you think that He created Eve to be like that? She is honorable, efficient, trustworthy, resourceful and talented, especially when it comes to sewing and needlework. She is wise, a good business woman, and not at all lazy. You’d never see her watching TV, movies, playing cards or video games, or sports games. She wouldn’t have time for meaningless entertainment. She has a strong character, is dignified and worthy of everyone’s admiration. Most of all she respects the Lord and because of her relationship with the Lord, she is fearless. She relies on Him so much that she isn’t afraid of the future or what any seasonal weather brings. More ladies should be like her! Let’s praise the Lord for allowing her to be our example. May we all be more like her.
Prayer ~ Dear God…I have the utmost of respect and love for You. I humbly bow before You and ask that You would create in me qualities like You have given this Proverbs 31 woman. Help me not to be lazy, but to be industrious, creative, resourceful and...fearless.
