By the Power of God

But God made the earth by His power, and He preserves it by His wisdom. With His own understanding He stretched out the heavens. Jeremiah 10:12

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1.

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:1-5.

God is all powerful. His wisdom holds even the atoms of everything together. Job’s friends recognized God’s power. Look, God is all-powerful. Who is a teacher like him? Job 36:22. When facing a war from their enemies' armies King Jehoshaphat of Judah stood before the new courtyard of the Temple in Jerusalem and prayed. O LORD, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you! 2 Chronicles 20:6. Do you and your friends recognize and acknowledge God’s power?

Prayer ~ Lord God—You are all powerful and awesome. You are above all and creator of all of heaven and earth. As a mere human I can only partially comprehend how mighty You are…but I am honored to be part of Your family. I know that You have a plan for my life…and for that of my family and friends. Into Your capable and powerful hands I commit myself, as well as my family and friends. May we make decisions that please You.

Don’t Boast

This is what the LORD says: "Don't let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches." Jeremiah 9:23

Boast—to speak with exaggeration and excessive pride, especially about oneself or to speak of with excessive pride or vanity.

Boast no more so very proudly, do not let arrogance come out of your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and with Him actions are weighed. 1 Samuel 2:3

The king of Israel sent back this answer: "A warrior putting on his sword for battle should not boast like a warrior who has already won." 1 Kings 20:11

As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world's interest in me has also died. Galatians 6:14

Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:9

Don’t boast—wise, powerful or rich. That’s what the Lord wants. God wants His followers to be…humble. The dandelion, a mere weed, is showy, but humble. Humble is pretty much opposite of boastful. Humble servants. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many. Matthew 20:26-28. Do you see yourself as a humble servant for the Lord?

Prayer ~ Lord on this Memorial Day, let us remember those who have gone before us…who have given their lives to humbly serve You.

Comfort the Weary

The Sovereign LORD has given me His words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning He wakens me and opens my understanding to His will. Isaiah 50:4

Badger Mt Phlox
The greatest Comforter of the weary to me is Jesus, in the Holy Spirit who is known as The Comforter. Jesus promised…Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28. There is so much in life that makes us weary…jobs, kids, time conflicts, housework, commuting, traffic jams or road rage, confusion, and just unmet expectation. Life is tough. God’s wisdom in us and through us can certainly make a difference. Sometimes just a smile can be encouraging…and help those along the way who are struggling. I try to climb Badger Mountain near my home at least one a week. The elevation is 1,593 feet at the top although the Canyon Trail is only about an 800 foot ascent from the parking lot. It is pretty steep in several places and a lot of people hiking it are huffing and puffing. Giving them a “you can make it” or even just a smile of encouragement always helps those who already weary in their hike up the hillside. Even the plants seem to give an encouraging smile as we hike by them. God knows what we need.

How can you come alongside of someone who is struggling spiritually—weary with their load? Having a verse of encouragement is a good start. This one from Jesus in Matthew 11:28 has been good for me—lifting weight off my shoulders immediately when I hear it quoted.  What verse has encouraged you? Is there a verse that the Lord brings to your mind as you wake each morning?

Prayer ~ Lord, give us ears to hear You speak to us that we would be an encouragement to the weary souls around us. May we all cast our burdens on You…knowing that You care about us more than we know. Thank You for Your mercy and grace in our lives that is new every morning.

Babylon’s Wisdom or Lack of it Revealed

You felt secure in your wickedness. 'No one sees me,' you said. But your 'wisdom' and 'knowledge' have led you astray, and you said, 'I am the only one, and there is no other.' Isaiah 47:10

God’s chosen people weren’t perfect. They were disobedient…like most children…and so God punished them by allowing them to be taken away—out of the Promised Land—by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Here in the passage above Isaiah was writing to the Babylonians who had taken the Hebrew people captive. In order to better understand a passage it is usually always good to read the verses before and after a particular scripture selection. Reading all of Isaiah and also the book of Daniel would be helpful in this case. The whole Bible is so interconnected that you may even need to read Jeremiah and Leviticus, as well as 1 and 2 Kings to get an understanding of that historical era and the Israelites response to God.

O beautiful Babylon, sit now in darkness and silence. Never again will you be known as the queen of kingdoms. For I was angry with my chosen people and punished them by letting them fall into your hands. But you, Babylon, showed them no mercy. You oppressed even the elderly. You said, 'I will reign forever as queen of the world!' You did not reflect on your actions or think about their consequences. Listen to this, you pleasure-loving kingdom, living at ease and feeling secure. You say, 'I am the only one, and there is no other. I will never be a widow or lose my children.' Well, both these things will come upon you in a moment: widowhood and the loss of your children. Yes, these calamities will come upon you, despite all your witchcraft and magic. You felt secure in your wickedness. 'No one sees me,' you said. But your 'wisdom' and 'knowledge' have led you astray, and you said, 'I am the only one, and there is no other.' So disaster will overtake you, and you won't be able to charm it away. Calamity will fall upon you, and you won't be able to buy your way out. A catastrophe will strike you suddenly, one for which you are not prepared. Isaiah 47:5-11.
Clearly the Israelites disobeyed God in not observing His commandments—particularly that concerning the resting of the land. How often do we actually obey…or disobey…the Ten Commandments? When was the last time that you truly observed the entire Sabbath day? What day do you celebrate the Sabbath…Saturday or Sunday? Do you begin at sundown on the previous day? Do you cook or go out to eat, forcing someone else to cook for you? When is their Sabbath day? Life is complicated. How do we honor God? Are we making wise choices?

Prayer ~ Lord God, give me wisdom and grace to follow Your commands…not as a ritual or in a rote manner to the letter of the Law. Guide me in my choices and decisions in such a way that our relationship is not broken, but that it is enhanced and that You are honored.

Rejoice!

This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

Words of wisdom. This was a favorite verse of a dear friend of ours—John Foster—who went to be with the Lord five years ago and for whom Jerry had a lot of respect. So this scripture has become Jerry’s favorite verse, too. We will rejoice—today! It is Jer’s birthday and what better way to celebrate…to rejoice…than to focus on God and His wisdom that He share through others to us. John was such a good example—man after God’s own heart. He encouraged his family, friends, and fellow church members with his loving ways, always guiding, comforting, and sharing his life, his time, talents, challenging everyone to seek God and to be the best that they could be. Just as we can model our behavior after Paul…and of course after Jesus himself, we can see patterns of behavior in others around us that inspire us to be better people.

Our friend, Mel, is another person whom Jerry and I admire and in whom we rejoice that God has him in our life. Mel and Jerry grew up together and Mel was the Best Man in our wedding. About twenty years ago he was in an auto accident that resulted in back surgery and left him a paraplegic. He has such an amazingly positive attitude that has kept him going through multiple surgeries, illnesses, and setbacks. In his wisdom…God’s wisdom…he chooses to think positively and to have a good attitude about his circumstances. That initial choice when he knew he’d never walk again but he would make the most of it was a key decision point in his life. God was with him then…and continues to guide him every day now. He keeps on going…keeps on smiling. He is a joy to be around…a blessing to all who know him. We’re looking forward to seeing him again this summer…and eating some good Czech food from the Bohemian Café in Omaha together. Rejoice! Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Philippians 4:4

Prayer ~ Lord, may we continually rejoice in Your love and grace. Bless Jerry in this coming year…and always. May our family and friends rejoice also…and make good decisions in all that they do and say.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
The highlight of Jerry’s day is a good meal—especially a Czech one. His favorite place to visit for special meals is his hometown, Omaha, Nebraska. Home of good steaks, La Casa’s pizza, Joe Tess’ fried carp or catfish, and most beloved—The Bohemian Café—where they serve up large portions of boiled beef with dill gravy, bread dumplings, sauerkraut, and sweet and sour cabbage.

Sweet-Sour Cabbage
1 head cabbage, chopped or shredded
1 tsp salt –preferably Himalayan
1 small onion, diced
½ tsp caraway seed, optional
2 cups water
2 Tbsp butter
2 tsp sugar
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar (or more)

Cook cabbage, salt, onion and caraway seed in 2 cups of water until tender. Drain and add butter, sugar and vinegar. Cook to blend. Cabbage may be thickened with flour if desired. The longer the cabbage cooks in the sweet and sour sauce, the better it becomes. Our daughter, Lisa, kept some of this recipe warming in a crock-pot for about six hours and it was some of the best sweet and sour cabbage we’d ever had. Jerry’s folks were still living then and it was for a special Czech dinner that Lisa fixed just for them. Another variation of this adds 1 apple, peeled and chopped, and cooked along with the cabbage and onion.

Serve with Boiled Beef, Dumplings, Dill Gravy and Rye Bread. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Jerry!
I am blessed to be your wife.

Did You Find Your Treasure in the Lord?

In that day He will be your sure foundation, providing a rich store of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD will be your treasure. Isaiah 33:6

In that day…what day? The day…the time that Christ’s kingdom is established with the New Jerusalem as the center. Jesus is our salvation—now. He is the source of knowledge and wisdom—providing us with a stable and righteous foundation. What more can we ask or expect? Of course, He has our respect. My study Bible references Matthew 6:33 for treasure. I love the song that was written from this scripture.  Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33. Along the same thought…Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6:20-21. We love and respect the things…and people…that we hold dear to our hearts…that we treasure. I personally treasure relationships more than things. I do treasure my relationship with the Lord. Without Him my life would be meaningless and likely filled with anxiety. With Him, I find peace, joy and contentment. Yes, just as Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, …Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:11-13. Verse 13 is the key verse…I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 NASB. Find your strength in the Lord.

Prayer ~ Lord God, continue to fill me with contentment in whatever circumstances that I find myself. Your love never fails—I find new joy in You every morning. You, Jesus, are my treasure...my  salvation—as well as my source of knowledge and wisdom. May You continually be glorified in all that I think, say and do.

The Lord’s Wisdom

In His wisdom, the LORD will send great disaster; He will not change His mind. He will rise against the wicked and against their helpers. Isaiah 31:2

God is wisdom. Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways! Romans 11:33.  God doesn’t change His mind. Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. James 1:17. He shows compassion to those who respond to His love… The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him." The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. Lamentations 3:22-25 NASB

We shouldn’t take this scripture out of context—it was prophetic and historical. The wicked, evil people deserved the disaster that Isaiah was predicting. Do people today who don’t follow the Lord’s way, are wicked…or that worship idols…deserve to have a great disaster?

Do we seek God and His wisdom? The best source of God’s wisdom today is our Bible. Some things change…or fade away…but God’s Word never changes.

Prayer ~ Lord God, continue to inspire us through Your Word. It is fresh every morning. How do You do that? Over the thousands of years…it is still giving us insight, knowledge and best of all…Your Wisdom. Give us grace to understand Your Word more deeply and thus to comprehend more of You each day. Bless us as we seek to know and serve You.

How Do You Worship the Lord?

And so the Lord says, "These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote. Because of this, I will once again astound these hypocrites with amazing wonders. The wisdom of the wise will pass away, and the intelligence of the intelligent will disappear." Isaiah 29:13-14

Temple Model - Jerusalem
How do you worship the Lord? David gave advice to his son, Solomon. And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve Him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek Him, you will find Him. But if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9. This is the best advice…wise guidance.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well that people—true worshipers—should worship in spirit and in truth—with their whole hearts. But the time is coming—indeed it's here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. John 4:23-24.

Give God your total attention in worship. To me that’s what it means to worship in spirit and truth. Don’t get distracted by people moving about the sanctuary. You can worship anywhere…anytime. God is disappointed by man-made worship “rules” and surface level honor. Get to the heart of God…let Him deep within your heart and life…abide...moment by moment. Don’t wait until Sunday. Seek and honor Him every day.

Prayer ~ Lord God, You are worthy of my praise and worship. I want to honor You in everything I think, do and say. I am so excited that I have found You. Actually it was You who called me and I responded. Just as You have promised to never leave me or forsake me (Hebrews 13:5)…I promise to never leave You or forsake You. I look forward to a long time relationship…eternally…with You.

Trust in the Lord

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8

What a promise! He will show you where to go—which path to take. If we love God and obey His commandments, showing His love by loving one another…then others will know we are Christian—as written in John 13:34-35. Jesus said…So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

How do we show our love? By respecting others, by giving up our own selfish attitude—thus self-sacrificing our time, talents or possessions to serve others. In serving others we are taking on Christ’s attitude.
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus…. Philippians 2:1-5 NASB.

So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude He had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You won't spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. 1 Peter 4:1-2

Cartwheel Kiddo
Seek His will in all that you do. What is the will of God?  Not everyone who calls out to me, 'Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. Matthew 7:21. Jesus said to a crowd that followed Him to Capernaum. For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those He has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father's will that all who see His Son and believe in Him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day. John 6:38-40. Seek God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength. Seek to know His Son, Jesus. Then… Trust in the LORD with all your heart….

Ten years ago we sat and waited for our first grandchild…a grandson…to be born. Trusting God for a safe delivery and a healthy baby. God was gracious and faithful…and it has been a wonderful ten years of joy, laughter, learning and fun sharing in the life of that beloved child. The Cartwheel Kiddo. Thank You, God.

Prayer ~ Lord God…I trust You. I acknowledge that You, Jesus, are the Son of God—and You are my Savior…my Messiah. Direct my path…my thoughts…and my actions that everything I do and say may bring You glory. Bless, guide, direct and fill with Your love the heart, soul and mind of those I love. May they honor You.
Happy Birthday, Zander.
May God continue to bless and guide you.  Love You Much.

Wisdom for Growth

Listen to me; listen, and pay close attention. Does a farmer always plow and never sow? Is he forever cultivating the soil and never planting? ... The farmer knows just what to do, for God has given him understanding. ... The LORD of Heaven's Armies is a wonderful teacher, and He gives the farmer great wisdom. Isaiah 28:23-24, 26, 29

It is the time of the year for gardeners as well as farmers to get their seeds and plants into the ground. I planted…and then replanted after a kiddo thought my raised garden bed was his digging bin. Oops. Those bean and zucchini sprouts would have never survived to become plants! Now we’re looking forward to some good zucchini this summer. The farms around here—many with grape vineyards, apples trees, potatoes, wheat, and corn—are all green and growing. We’ve had a wet spring for our semi-desert area that usually gets less than ten inches of rain a year. God provides wisdom and understanding to the farmers—to water just the right amount—considering the rain, what to plant and when to plant—and how to care for his crops. Technology has advanced so much in the past twenty years and computers are an important part of a farmer’s tool bag. That technology is part of God’s plan. God has a plan for each of us.
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me." Jeremiah 29:11-13.
Just has He gave and gives wisdom to the farmers, He will give each of us wisdom…if we pray and ask for it. Pray—He’ll listen. Look for Him and you will find Him. His promises are as old as the Old Testament—and as new and fresh as our imaginations can conjure up an image of the possibilities. Endless. Listen. There is wisdom available for growth…for each of us and for plants.

Prayer ~ Lord, grant us Your grace and fill us with Your wisdom that we would use the understanding that You provide to reach others for You.

Spirit of Wisdom

And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. Isaiah 11:2

Isaiah provides us with a prophesy of Jesus as the Messiah. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding will rest on Him. Will rest on Him…and it came to pass. Jesus did have the Spirit of Wisdom rest on Him. God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; He made us pure and holy, and He freed us from sin. 1 Corinthians 1:30. Counsel—providing advice and purpose. This also comes from the LORD of hosts, who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great. Isaiah 28:29 NASB. The Spirit of knowledge—Jesus knows everything. He is the Messiah.

Like Paul prayed for the people at the church of Ephesus… I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called--His holy people who are His rich and glorious inheritance. Ephesians 1:16-18.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I lift up my family, friends and all who read this blog that You would give them complete knowledge of Your will and spiritual wisdom and understanding. Colossians 1:9.

Value of Wisdom

Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That's the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed. Ecclesiastes 10:10

Do you have an ax to grind? Do you have something about which to complain? Grind that ax so that it is sharp and you can work at chopping wood more efficiently. No grumbling or complaining. Do everything without complaining and arguing….Philippians 2:14. Nothing will tire you out faster…and frustrate you more…that trying to use a dull ax—and complaining about it. Actually it is probably an unsafe thing to use a dull ax The ax could bounce off the wood you are trying to chop…and hit you. Even a dull ax can do some major damage to the human body. Sharpening the ax is wise thing to do. It definitely will help you succeed in your wood chopping efforts. Do you have a way to sharpen that ax? It also works on relationships. As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. Proverbs 27:17. Are you willing to seek wisdom to help a friend?

Prayer ~ Lord, help me to give and receive wisdom…to sharpen a friendship.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
When considering what recipe to blog for today I asked my daughter what was he son’s favorite food/recipe? They live 3,000 miles away and with changing tastes I don’t always know the kiddos current favorites. She told me Zander is on a new diet. He likes four major food groups. Candy, Candy Canes, Candy Corn and Syrup. Hmmm. Interesting food groups. Z will be ten next week—here’s to your new diet! Cheers!

When I was growing up my sister and I frequently made taffy—especially in the summertime. We had the  Betty Crocker’s Cook Book for Boys and Girls.  The first six pages are missing—so I don’t know when it was published, but it must have been around 1956 or 1957. Since the Sugar Cookie page is very soiled, we probably used that recipe the most. Jjust for you, Zander—here’s my family’s favorite Taffy recipe. Make sure you use Nebraska corn syrup—or one with no GMOs. Not sure your orthodontist is going to want you to eat this—so make the pieces really small!

Taffy
Butter a platter.
Stir together in a large saucepan and heat slowly until all sugar is dissolved.
            1 cup sugar
            ½ cup water
            ¼ cup light corn syrup
            1/8 tsp salt
Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
Continue cooking and stirring. Test occasionally by dropping a small amount from a spoon into a cup of ice water. Taffy is done when you can form a hard ball in the ice water or when it reaches 255 degrees F on a candy thermometer.

At once pour onto platter.

When syrup is cool enough to handle, gather it into a ball and pull it—and pull it until it is white and firm. Grease hands slightly with oil or butter so taffy won’t stick to your hands. This is a fun family activity.

Pull taffy out into a rope, twist, and cut with scissors. Enjoy it—but don’t let it ruin your braces!
Taffy can be flavored by adding a few drops of peppermint, 1 tsp vanilla, or 2 Tbsp cocoa just before you start to pull it.

Wrap any leftover pieces in waxed paper so they don’t stick together.

Stinky Wisdom?

As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor. Ecclesiastes 10:1

Dead flies…yuk! Protect your perfume so that flies can’t get inside the bottle. That’s what we need to do with our hearts and minds, too. Protect ourselves from vile things—like dead flies that become smelly. Foolishness—even a little—is like that dead fly in the perfume… malodorous. Wisdom and honor are pure—undefiled—but foolishness can make a person lose their good judgment and act in ways that could be considered unbecoming…stinky. According to Wikipedia, the line…Fools rush in where angels fear to tread…was written in the early 1700’s by Alexander Pope in a poem, An Essay on Criticism. It has been used in some form countless times in movies, books, songs and lectures. That quote came to mind—we need to be like the angels and watch where we walk...maybe even wisely being fearful of walking in some places. Which way should we walk?
Which Way Should We Walk?
Fools don’t choose wisely where they go…or what they do. Choose wisely. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. Proverbs 2:11.

Life is complicated and even God doesn’t guarantee that life will be easy. He just promises in Hebrews 13:5 that He will never leave us or forsake us. We make our own choices every day. We have free will. I frequently pray for my children and grandchildren to make good choices throughout their day. Good choices in friends, food, fun…and a path that leads them ever closer to the Lord. Like Joshua…choose wisely… But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15. Hopefully no stinky choices for any of us.

Prayer ~ Lord, guide the hearts, minds, words and actions of my family and friends…as well as me…that we would make good decisions that would result in behaviors that please and honor You.

Better to Have Wisdom than Weapons of War

Better to have wisdom than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much that is good. Ecclesiastes 9:18

I’m not big on gun or fighting. I’ve been known to get up and leave when my husband is watching a shoot-em-up movie. I can only take just a little blood and brawn. I think that wisdom…some wise words carefully chosen can do a lot more to end a dispute than battling it out with guns…or other weapons of war. God had His people fight so many battles in the Bible—to allow them to cleanse the Promised Land. But even with all their fighting, the battles were not over—never ended.
Peaceful Sea of Galilee
The wars in the Palestine-Israel area still go on…and on. As I see it, the disputes go back to Abraham and Sarah. Sarah didn’t trust the Lord for her own barren condition to end and gave her handmaid Hagar to Abraham to fulfill God’s promise of a son. Hagar bore a son, Ishmael, who became the father of many nations…Arab nations that fought against the Hebrew nations. War after war. All because of one sinner. Was that sinner Sarah who didn’t trust God to open her womb…or was it Abraham who gave into sleeping with Sarah’s handmaid? Who are we to judge? Their lack of wisdom was the beginning of all Middle Eastern wars…that continue even today. There is no quick fix. Those may be words of wisdom. No quick fix.

Prayer ~ Lord, please give me grace and knowledge to hear Your wisdom when You speak to me. May Your wisdom guide my thoughts, words and actions. Although I’m not in a position like Sarah and Abraham—I need Your guidance because I don’t want to destroy anything—especially anything that is good.

May the people of Israel and the Arab nations surrounding them find peace…even if it is only peace in their hearts…and Jesus as their Messiah.

Are the Quiet Words That You Hear Wise Words?

Better to hear the quiet words of a wise person than the shouts of a foolish king. Ecclesiastes 9:17

Garden of Gethsemane Gate
There are some people who rarely say very much. Those are the ones to whom I listen closely. Their words are usually wise…and worth listening to. Kings…or presidents…are not necessarily wise just because of their responsibilities or position. What “wise” words have you heard lately from any worldly political leader or even from a hopeful politician running for office?

What makes words “wise”? Are they just good advice for living? Are they cleaver thoughts on how to do something in a profound way? Are they discerning—showing right from wrong? Are they words that provide good judgment based on righteous living or true knowledge?

Whatever “wise” words you happen to hear, I hope that you listen closely and discern them for yourself. I think that shows true wisdom. Think for yourself. Be a gate keeper of your own heart and mind.

Prayer ~ Lord God, open my ears and heart to hear Your still small voice speaking quiet wisdom to me. May I be attentive to Your words and apply them to my life.

No Boundaries for Wisdom

So even though wisdom is better than strength, those who are wise will be despised if they are poor. What they say will not be appreciated for long. Ecclesiastes 9:16

Think about the wisest person that you know. Is your high level of respect for them due to their great wisdom or their position in life? Teacher? Professor? Inventor? Pastor? Doctor? Author? Political Leader? Homeless or living in a mansion? Do you totally listen to them? How long do you appreciate what they say? Do you treasure their wisdom in your heart? Wisdom knows no boundaries. God gives wisdom to the rich and the poor. Have you asked Him for wisdom lately? Do you share your wisdom with others and do they appreciate the wisdom that God has given to you? Wisdom is better than strength. Strength can fail like shifting sand. What good is it to be strong and foolish?

Prayer ~ Lord, Your wisdom is greater and better than strength. Grant me wisdom that I may use it to encourage others. May they see You working in my life and if they don’t know You as their Savior, may they be inspired to seek You for themselves. You have promised that if we seek You with all of our heart, we will find You. Just as David told his son, Solomon: "And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve Him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” 1 Chronicles 28:9. I praise You for opening my eyes and my heart to know You more deeply—intimately. Know my plans, and guide me that I would serve You and please You forever.

The one thing I ask of the LORD—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD's perfections and meditating in His Temple. Psalm 27:4.

Do Whatever…Well

Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom. Ecclesiastes 9:10

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians 3:23. If you are working for the Lord, you will want to do your best. I do. I also try to follow advice from one of my favorite people. Dade W. Moeller, founder of Dade Moeller & Associates, world renown Health Physicist and author, wrote an encouraging sixteen point speech several years ago entitled Guidelines for Life—Rules for Success. One of those points was “Do every job a little better than anyone expects. If it’s good enough, it’s not.” I think that Dr. Moeller based that on the way Jesus approached life. Do your best—not just good enough to get by. Those are good words by which to live.  Does that fit into your way of doing things? Will you be totally obedient as you love God and others—not just good enough to get by?

When you go to the grave there will be rest. Sleep. Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians about those “sleeping”—dead in the grave—when Christ returns.
The Empty Tomb - Jerusalem
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 NASB.
Are you ready for Christ’s return? Get ready. Be ready…we don’t know the hour or the day.

Prayer ~ Lord, may whatever I do now while I am still alive, please You. One day I will go to the grave and that will be it—no more work, no plans, no gains in knowledge or wisdom. Just rest and sleep—until You return. Open my eyes to anything that I need to do—now—before You return.

Wisdom Lights

How wonderful to be wise, to analyze and interpret things. Wisdom lights up a person's face, softening its harshness. Ecclesiastes 8:1

Light. Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."  John 8:12. It is Jesus’ face that shines—and allows our hearts to shine for Him. We merely reflect His glory. For God, who said, "Let there be light in the darkness," has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6. In His grace and mercy God allows us to be transformed into the image of His Son. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image. 2 Corinthians 3:18.

I long for that day when I see Jesus face to face. May I reflect His glory—even now, although I feel pitifully unworthy. Life is a series of choices—and I feel that I haven’t always made the most encouraging choices in response to confrontations—even with a seven-year old. Same story…same song—new verse. Not exactly walking in Jesus’ wisdom and light. How are you doing with reflecting Jesus’ light?
Prayer ~ Dear Lord, I want to be wise, to analyze and interpret things. I want my face to light up—reflecting Your glory—softening the harshness made by poor choices—the wrinkles of time spent in ways other than worshiping You. God, unite me with Christ Jesus—wisdom itself. Purify my heart, take away my sin —not just cover it up. Let me be right with You, pure and holy (1 Corinthians 1:30). I praise You—my Lord, my Savior, my King, my God.

Peace, Not Ceaseless Activity

In my search for wisdom and in my observation of people's burdens here on earth, I discovered that there is ceaseless activity, day and night. Ecclesiastes 8:16

Have you ever visited a busy city where people are on the go 24 hours a day? I was surprised to find how much traffic there is between midnight and three in the morning here in the Tri-Cities where I live. I’m normally asleep at that time—but I was still up recently and there were people shopping for groceries during the middle of the night. You’d think we were in a metropolitan area. Cities like Seattle even have busy highways at all hours of the day and night. Busy—busy! People are out there…going somewhere…searching for something—like a way to get rich quick. Money, or the lack of it, is such a motivating factor. Yet there must be some people today, like Solomon, who are searching for wisdom. I am. I know the source—it is God. God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; He made us pure and holy, and He freed us from sin. 1 Corinthians 1:30. The wonderful thing about Jesus making us right with God the Father is that in taking on our sin—to the cross—He didn’t just cover up our sin with His blood. He washed our sin away—making us pure and holy.
There is no need for us to have ceaseless activity…searching for…whatever. We can rest in Jesus. We can find peace in Jesus. Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Romans 5:1. God has the same plan for His chosen people, the Jews. This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Acts 10:36. Peace. Not ceaseless activity.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I am grateful for the peace and wisdom that You provide. I don’t have to be part of the ceaseless activity that goes on around the world. You are peace, Jesus. You are wisdom. I find my rest in You.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
My husband and I recently ate at a wonderful Indian restaurant in Pasco, Love Curry. We had the tastiest food that we’d eaten in the Tri-Cities in years. To begin with we ordered a raw beet salad. I am a beet fan…and have been told for years that beets are a good liver detoxifier. We all need to detox our bodies and the best place to start is the liver. God created the liver to detox our blood daily—so we should give it a boost and detox it. Hope you enjoy this Raw Beet Salad as much as we did. It was a perfect accompaniment to the spicy goat curry and lamb chop curry that we also had for dinner.

Indian Raw Beet Salad

½ cup raw beet, peeled and julienned
½ cup raw daikon, peeled and julienned
1 medium tomato, sliced (about sized portions as julienned beets)
¼ cup cilantro (or substitute flat leafed parsley, if preferred)
1 green onion, very thinly sliced (about sized portions as julienned beets)

Combine vegetables. Divide between two plates and serve before or with a curry main dish.

Are You Searching for Wisdom?

I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness. Ecclesiastes 7:25

Why was Solomon searching for wisdom? God had given him wisdom, discernment, honor, riches, and a promise of long life, if he followed God’s commandments. See 1 King 3:9-14 and 1 Kings 4:29-34. He looked for wisdom and found how people are caught up in their own pleasures. Among the things that Solomon noted is something that is still true today… But I did find this: God created people to be virtuous, but they have each turned to follow their own downward path. Ecclesiastes 7:29. We all have our shortcomings and it is a constant battle of choices to choose that virtuous path that God puts before us. It is simply a choice that we make every day—God’s way or our way.

Are we like Solomon searching everywhere for wisdom and understanding? Looking everywhere in the world. It takes a constant effort…one that means turning off the TV, radio, iPad or phone and focusing on God’s words of wisdom and how we can apply them to our lives. It is easy—the road of least resistance—to just sit mesmerized by the TV and not take any action to “search for wisdom” in God’s Word or anywhere else.

What is foolishness?  I think it is a choice or action that disregards God’s ways and brings disgrace on oneself. It is acting without thinking, so as Solomon wanted to prove…foolishness is madness.
Wise people think before they act; fools don't—and even brag about their foolishness. Proverbs 13:16

Simpletons are clothed with foolishness, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge. ... People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness. Proverbs 14:18, 29

The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness. ... Foolishness brings joy to those with no sense; a sensible person stays on the right path. Proverbs 15:2, 21.

Likewise, wickedness is not a good choice. It is stupid.  Wickedness does not please God.
Your wickedness will bring its own punishment. Your turning from me will shame you. You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is to abandon the LORD your God and not to fear him. I, the Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies, have spoken! Jeremiah 2:19.

But God shows His anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. Romans 1:18
There is a way out… But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9. Confess—agree with God. He knows all about us before we even turn to Him. The best part is that He is merciful—He will forgive us. Try it—you’ll like it.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I confess my sins and claim the faithful justice and forgiveness that You promise, cleansing me from all my wicked thoughts, words and actions. Thank you for Your generous mercy and grace pouring out over my life. Please now drench my heart with Your wisdom—filling those very spots that were once filled with foolish wickedness. You are a wonderful loving God—my Father, Creator, Messiah, sustainer, friend, comforter—and provider of all wisdom, joy and love.

Hidden Wisdom

Wisdom is always distant and difficult to find. Ecclesiastes 7:24

Consider God’s actions towards His chosen people as written by Paul to the Roman church.
I ask, then, has God rejected His own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin. No, God has not rejected his own people, whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you realize what the Scriptures say about this? Elijah the prophet complained to God about the people of Israel and said, "LORD, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too." And do you remember God's reply? He said, "No, I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal!" It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God's grace—His undeserved kindness in choosing them. And since it is through God's kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God's grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved. So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have—the ones God has chosen—but the hearts of the rest were hardened. As the Scriptures say, "God has put them into a deep sleep. To this day He has shut their eyes so they do not see, and closed their ears so they do not hear." Likewise, David said, "Let their bountiful table become a snare, a trap that makes them think all is well. Let their blessings cause them to stumble, and let them get what they deserve. Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and let their backs be bent forever." Did God's people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But He wanted His own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves. Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God's offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they (The Israelites) finally accept it. Romans 11:1-12.
This is wisdom—the revealing of God’s plan for His chosen people—the Israelites. What a glorious day that is for every Jew upon whom God’s grace falls, whose eyes see and ears hear the Truth, and they accept their Messiah, their salvation. A very glorious day—I rejoice with them—with each of my Jewish acquaintances—for whom I pray frequently.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, open the eyes and ears of Jews around the world—that they would know You as their Lord and Savior. They may still be looking for a national or political savior—but You are the conquering Savior for whom they long and continually search. Praise You—Lord and Savior of Jews and Gentiles alike.

What Can Save Your Life? Wisdom?

Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life. Ecclesiastes 7:12

Everything has a price. People may tell you something is free…but there is no free lunch. Nothing is free except God’s love and forgiveness. Money can’t buy you salvation or wisdom. Stuff from God doesn’t have a price tag. He won’t charge us anything. In fact…He provides everything we need.
So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:31-33.
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross offers us salvation…and life. Solomon wrote in this Ecclesiastes passage that wisdom saves our life. Saves us from what? Death—eternal death. Having our life “saved” is important only if we are afraid of death. How do you feel about that? We are all going to die someday—that is our earthly bodies will die, but our spiritual being will continue to live—and to live in Heaven IF we allow wisdom to save us. That is, IF, in our Christian point of view, we allow Jesus to save us from eternal damnation. I believe that He can…that He has saved those who believe in Him as the Son of God. He said…Then He(Jesus) said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it." Luke 9:23-24.
Consider these scriptures:
Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. Proverbs 9:11.
If you are wise and understand God's ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. James 3:13.
Good works won’t get anyone to heaven, but it is still desirable to do good for others—to serve others. God saved you by H
is grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9.
Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works. James 2:26

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, thank you for being willing to be sacrificed on a cross…and for the obedience that You showed to Our Father. You are Wisdom. You are The Truth, The Way and The Life. I look forward to seeing You face to face one day in Heaven.
